BUFFALO, NY – The Frostburg State Field Hockey rolled to a 9-1 victory over D'Youville on the road Sunday afternoon.
Â
It took just two and a half minutes for FSU to start controlling the game, as senior Paige Leitzel had a crack at goal that was saved by keeper Sarah Reifsnyder. The chances kept coming over a six-minute spell, as Leitzel was denied twice by Reifsnyder, with senior Aubree Dorsey also turned away and sophomore Layla Lagunas drawing a defensive save on the goal line.
Â
With three and a half minutes left in the period, freshman Caroline Earnshaw finally got the breakthrough goal, having been fed by Dorsey for a 1-0 lead. Off of a pair of penalty corners, both Leitzel and Dorsey were thwarted on shot attempts, then with the final attacking play of the quarter, sophomore Sofia Boyle inserted a corner to Dorsey, who passed across to junior Avary Hayden to make it a 2-0 score.
Â
Within a minute of the second period beginning, Letizel drew a Reifsnyder save followed by a Bobcat corner, from which senior Hannah Haberkorn found Earnshaw for her second of the day and a 3-0 advantage. Four minutes later, Lagunas assisted junior Mikyla Rineer for a fourth, while freshman Makenna Buffington netted her first career goal on a solo run to end the half up 5-0.
Â
FSU repeated the pattern of play to start the third, as Reifsnyder was forced into four saves within the first 10 minutes. Following a corner taken by Lagunas, junior Piper Taylor worked the ball over to Leitzel to fire home. Just 30 seconds later, however, the Saints got themselves on the board with their first attacking chance of the day, as Ella Darvalics ran through on goal to break up the shutout bid.
Â
Frostburg peppered Reifsnyder's goal in resuming their dominance during the fourth, as sophomore Rachel Young and freshmen Ava Shorkey and Brooke Saul forced a combined four saves within two minutes. After Saul and freshman Kenzie Cummins were both denied, Boyle notched an assist to Shorkey for her first collegiate goal, followed immediately by junior Emma Price putting in her first of the season. With just over two minutes remaining, Buffington allowed Boyle to open her scoring account and make the final score 9-1.
Â
The Bobcats dominated the shot count 37-2, with a whopping 31 efforts on target.
Â
With the win, Frostburg improves to 2-6 on the year, while D'Youville drops to 0-8. FSU returns home on Wednesday, October 1 to face Shippensburg at 4 p.m. in the team's annual Pink Game in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
