SPARKILL, N.Y. – The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team won its second game in a row on the road, defeating St. Thomas Aquinas by a score of 12-2.
The nation's leader in face-off win percentage, senior Alex Walstrum, continued his dominance and started the game off with a dub in the X. FSU would test the Spartan goalie early on, forcing three saves before even facing an opposing shot. The Bobcats broke through just over six minutes into play, when senior Wesley Phillips scored on a feed from junior Graham Allison to put FSU up 1-0. Frostburg wasted no time scoring again 40 seconds later, when Philips found sophomore Luke Roach. After three saves from the Bobcats' goalie senior Logan Covey, FSU added two more goals. Sophomore Henry Sykes scored and shortly thereafter Phillips would get his second of the game. Already having a good start to the game, Phillips added another point assisting on junior Christian Killoran's goal. Frostburg closed out the first quarter leading 5-0.
The second quarter was much like the first, with FSU peppering shots at STAC. Frostburg had 15 shots in the second, with eight being on goal. The Spartans goalie hung tough picking up six saves to only let the Bobcats add two goals in the quarter. The Bobcats wouldn't score until the clock went under five remaining in the second, as Sykes found Phillips to go up 6-0. FSU senior long stick midfielder Seamus Kearney then added the final goal of the half to make the lead going into the break 7-0 in favor of FSU.
With an assertive edge, the Bobcat's defense would only get better, allowing just one shot from the Spartans in the quarter. STAC would turn the ball over 10 times in the third, seeing the Bobcats pick up 16 ground balls to their eight. Sophomore Jack Hooks scored the first for FSU in the quarter, as Phillips would convert on a man-up opportunity to give FSU a 9-0 lead. The final goal of the third came from junior John Serina just under the two-minute mark to make the game 10-0 going into the final quarter.
Phillips found junior Matt Williams early in the fourth to make it 11-0, as that would be Phillips fourth assist to go with his four goals to lead Frostburg's offense. Hooks scored the final goal for the Bobcats with nine minutes to play, as the Spartans would pick up two goals in the fourth to make the final 12-2.
Frostburg outshot the Spartans 58-20, had 47 ground balls and caused 10 turnovers. Walstrum was 7-8 on face-offs with fellow senior Gregg Dort going 4-8. Covey would get the win and pick up 12 saves.
With the win, Frostburg moves to 5-5 on the season, wile St. Thomas Aquinas drops to 2-5. The Bobcats will face Davis & Elkins at Bobcat Stadium next on Wednesday, April 2 for a 7 PM start. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
