PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team won their fifth consecutive game on Saturday, defeating Point Park on the road by a final score of 85-73.
Point Park took the tip, pulling down an offensive rebound and laying the ball right back in the hoop for the first score of the game. Senior Emilee Weakley knocked down a jumper for Frostburg to get them rolling, as PPU started a 9-0 run to jump in front 11-2 in the first four minutes. Freshman Ayla Hileman was able to put in another score for FSU, nailing a jumper of her own, but the Pioneers kept responding, showing a layup inside for a 13-4 game. Senior Taylor Smith sunk a triple, as PPU answered with one of their own to remain on top by nine. Weakley converted an and-one, hoping to spark the Bobcats momentum, but Point Park continued to rally, taking back-to-back scores for a 20-10 game. Smith sunk two more triples for FSU, but the Bobcats found themselves down 26-16 after one.
Weakley started off the second with a layup in the paint, seeing another and-one opportunity. Weakley continued her spark, seeing Frostburg's next two buckets for a 27-23 game. Point Park answered with a tip-in underneath to advance their lead to six, as a jumper from sophomore Alanna Tate and two free throws from sophomore Grace Middleton brought FSU within two. The Pioneers put up one more layup, with freshman Julie Spinelli responding with a layup of her own, before PPU took the next two buckets to jump in front 35-29. Weakley sunk a three to cut the Bobcat's deficit in half, but again Point Park stayed one step ahead, having another answer for FSU's score. Spinelli traded threes with the Pioneers as time ticked down in the second, as Weakley laid in a layup at the buzzer to sit the game at 40-37 in favor of PPU at the half.
Starting the momentum they needed, Smith hit a trey to start the second half for a 40-40 game. The Pioneers regained the lead at the charity stripe, but another three, this time from graduate Sarah Shamdeen, gave Frostburg their first lead of the game at 43-42. Point Park responded well once again, seeing a three of their own to slide back in front 45-43. An easy two from Weakley tied the game once more, as two free throws from Weakley almost a minute later gave the Bobcats a two-point edge. Weakley continued her success all over the floor, driving in for another layup underneath and a 49-45 FSU lead. Point Park showed a duo of scores to tie the game at 49, but Spinelli gave Frostburg back the lead at the free throw line with a perfect two-for-two trip. The game saw another tie at 51, but with 4:04 to play in the third, FSU rallied for an 11-0 run, with points from four different Bobcats to put Frostburg on top 62-51. PPU ended their drought, but FSU was able to stay in front as Spinelli and Tate hit shots as the quarter rounded out with the Bobcats in control 66-57 heading into the fourth.
PPU got things going at the foul line to begin the fourth, finding a layup as well to get within five. Tate sunk the first points of the quarter for Frostburg, as Weakley then collected five points herself, moving the game back to 73-61. Smith swapped points with the Pioneers, starting a 6-0 run for FSU to increase the game to 79-65. Point Park laid in an easy two underneath, as well did Tate on the other end to keep the score a 14-point differential. Weakley traded buckets with PPU as well as time went on, as FSU continued their well-rounded offense to stay ahead. Weakley nailed a jumper for the final points of the day for the Bobcats, as the Pioneers put up two more free throws to end the night with the score at 85-73 in favor of Frostburg.
Weakley led all scorers with a double-double of 36 points and 11 rebounds, shooting 14-for-21 from the floor. Smith was next with 18 points and seven rebounds, going 6-for-11 from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 from deep. Spinelli finished with 12 points and five rebounds, while Tate showed 10 points and five assists.
With the win, Frostburg moves to 17-9 on the season, while Point Park falls to 8-17. The Bobcats go on the road for their last time during the regular season, traveling to face Davis & Elkins on Wednesday, February 26 at 5:30 PM. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
