Allen Nets Late Goal, Sterne Preserves Shutout in Women's Soccer Win

FROSTBURG, Md. – With 1:29 left in regulation, senior Madi Allen sent the Frostburg State Women's Soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Fairmont State on Saturday afternoon.

In the early minutes, the Bobcats were quick to assert control, winning a pair of early corners, as senior Cat Smith had a shot saved, classmate Carolyn DeSena had one charged down and blocked, and junior Carly Gillette sent a great chance just over the bar. The Fighting Falcons worked their way into the contest, holding Frostburg without a shot for the next 15 minutes, while firing off three themselves, but only one effort tested senior Katie Sterne, who made the save.

Gillette then fired from distance a minute later, but was too close to Fairmont keeper Olivia Johnston. Sterne then was called into action, as a long free kick came into the box and took a high bounce, needing to jump and tip the ball over the bar. DeSena had a great chance with 18 minutes remaining in the half, being played through on goal, but her shot was again too close to Johnston, keeping the game scoreless. With less than five minutes until halftime, Sterne corralled a shot from deep right at her, as the period ended in a 0-0 draw.

The Bobcats came out fast to start the second 45, as after five minutes, they were able to win three straight corners. Smith sent another shot high, then freshman Raiyah Davis found herself with an opportunity from just inside the 18, but she couldn't get the effort past Johnston. Neither side gave much away for the next 20 minutes, as each team had one shot off target during the back-and-forth possession battle.

After another corner, Smith saw a goal-bound effort blocked as it was traveling to the back of the net, then Allen missed just wide on her next effort. After Sterne made another routine save, Smith again tried her luck, but was once more saved by Johnston. As the match appeared headed for a draw, freshman Mollie Rebuck received a loose ball inside the Fairmont half and played Allen into the box with a defender on her back, as she took a touch past the onrushing Johnston, nestling into the bottom left corner for a lead with just a minute and a half left. The Falcons had one last shot at Sterne's net, but she was able to make a safe catch just in front of the goal line, sealing the 1-0 victory.

Frostburg held a narrow 12-11 advantage in shots, leading 6-5 in efforts on goal and 6-2 in corner kicks.

With the win, the Bobcats improve to 6-1 on the year, while the Falcons fall to 4-2-1. Frostburg remains at home to face Glenville State on Wednesday, October 2 at 5 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
