FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team let a two-goal first half lead slip to Glenville State in a 2-2 draw on Wednesday afternoon.
Â
FSU began the game immediately threatening the GSU goal, with senior Cat Smith getting a pair of quick efforts away, including one that had to be cleared off the line from a corner. Just five minutes in, the Bobcat pressure paid off, as senior Carolyn DeSena surged down the right wing and lofted a cross to the back post that was met by classmate Madi Allen to get over the line for a 1-0 lead.
Â
Right from the resulting kick-off, the Pioneers nearly had an equalizer, as Aitana Viejo got in one-on-one with senior Katie Sterne, who was able to get in the way of a surefire goal to maintain the lead. After the opening flurry, both teams settled in without many clear-cut chances, as the only shots for the next 25 minutes were all either blocked or off target.
Â
Junior Jayme Sooy had one shot saved in the final 10 of the half, then Sterne matched with one of her own just a minute later. With almost five minutes on the clock, freshman Madison Hobson ran down a heavy pass, keeping it in play on the end line and crossing to the far post, where junior Carly Gillette put on the finishing touch to get a 2-0 Frostburg lead at the half.
Â
As they had done to begin the game, FSU was on the front foot to start the second period, as junior Morgan Mrizek saw an effort block before Allen had one saved that was going towards the top corner. It would be GSU, however, to snatch momentum with a pair of goals within a minute of each other, pulling level at 2-2. The first came on a Frostburg giveaway in their own defensive third, with Marcelle Stoller whipping in an effort from the edge of the 18, then a counterattack came on a Frostburg free kick, with Pioneer numbers surging down the field and equalizing through Valentina Quiroz.
Â
With just over 15 minutes to go, senior Mei Homman had the final shot on target of the game, a free kick from distance that bounced kindly into Lucia Lopez's hands. Both sides had some chances late, but couldn't find the target as the game ended with honors even at 2-2.
Â
With the draw, Frostburg now stands at 6-1-1 on the year, while Glenville State moves to 3-4-1. The Bobcats next hit the road to face Charleston (WV) on Sunday, October 6 at 1 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
