WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. – With a pair of second half goals, seniors Madi Allen and Carolyn DeSena proved to be the difference in Women's Soccer's 2-0 victory over West Liberty on the road Wednesday night.
Â
Five minutes into the contest, junior Mary Greco had the first effort for either side, a sharp drive from distance that was pushed away by keeper Cianna Butera. Over the next 10 minutes, junior Jayme Sooy had another shot outside the box that was right at Butera, then freshman Mollie Rebuck had two chances to turn and fire inside the box, but each were just too close to the Hilltopper netminder.
Â
FSU continued to pose the main attacks, as 13 minutes in, Rebuck had the ball in the back of the net, but it was pulled back for a foul on Butera. After a period of back-and-forth possession without many chances, junior Morgan Mrizek received the ball on the six-yard line and laid it off for Sooy, but her shot was quickly charged down. Five minutes later, Rebuck played freshman Cassidy Paige through on goal, as she checked back onto her right foot and fired towards the bottom right corner, but Butera got down to make the save and keep the game scoreless. It took until six minutes on the clock for West Liberty to register a shot, an effort from deep that went well over senior Katie Sterne's goal.
Â
The Bobcats started the second half with the majority of possession, but chances were limited to a couple of long-range efforts right at Butera. 15 minutes in, Frostburg finally took their chance, as freshman Ellie Fiedler hooked a ball into the box, where Allen rushed onto it, heading in for a 1-0 lead. FSU kept the pressure up, winning a corner just a minute later, as senior Mei Homman put the second ball back in and onto the head of Paige, but Butera made a stop on the goal line. Allen then shot from just inside the 18, missing just to the top right as the Hilltoppers just held on.
Â
After a WLU foray into Bobcat territory that only resulted in a mishit shot, Rebuck drove towards the box and cut onto her left foot, attempting to curl the ball into the far side but was denied on a flying Butera save. Neither side generated much over the next 20 minutes, with the action limited to a West Liberty shot straight at Sterne. Two minutes later, however, FSU was awarded a free kick from just over 20 yards out. Homman stood over it and surprised the Hilltopper defense by playing a short pass to DeSena just outside the 18, where she was able to take a touch and fire a shot off the bottom of the crossbar and over the line to give the Bobcats a two-goal cushion with just under six minutes to play.
Another effort from distance from WLU was well-handled on the bounce by Sterne, as that would be the final effort of the game, preserving the clean sheet victory. Frostburg had 20 shots with 13 on target over the 90 minutes, with the Hilltoppers limited to just six and three, respectively.
Â
With the win, the Bobcats improve to 5-1 on the year, while WLU falls to 1-4-1. FSU returns to Bobcat Stadium on Saturday, September 28 to face Fairmont State at 2 p.m., where the game will be followed by a Friends and Family Picnic. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
