ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Frostburg State field hockey team won on the road against Maryville by a final score of 3-1, with sophomore Emma Price netting two goals.
Â
After the long trip into the Central Time Zone, FSU took no time to strike first, as just 20 seconds into the game, junior Paige Leitzel scored for a 1-0 lead. The early FSU goal sparked an answer from the Saints applying pressure on the Bobcats until the game was tied just a few minutes later. Frostburg answered back later in the period, retaking the lead as Price scored on an assist from Leitzel to go up 2-1.
The second quarter was all Bobcats, adding to their lead five minutes into action with another goal from Price, as senior Lina Goetz picked up the assist on the now 3-1 FSU lead. The Bobcats continued to push the tempo, out-shooting the Saints 5-0 in the quarter, with defense dominating.
Coming into the second half with a two-goal lead Frostburg, tried to add to the lead on a few occasions, as senior Emilie Bonhivert and Leitzel both had shots at goal. Junior Zoe Barnes kept FSU out in front with a save at the end of the quarter to preserve the cushion.
Â
In the fourth quarter, FSU and Barnes kept the Saints of the board, as twice MU had looks on cage, but the Bobcat netminder was there to shut them down, closing out the victory.Â
Frostburg had more shots (10-8) and shots on goal (5-4), while Maryville held a 5-4 advantage in penalty corners.Â
FSU moved to 3-2 with the win and the Saints are now 4-2. Frostburg plays again tomorrow, September 22 when it faces off against Division I Saint Louis at 1 PM. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.Â
