Haney Scores 100th Point, Women's Lacrosse Overcomes 4th Quarter Deficit

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team took a comeback 11-9 victory over Shippensburg at home on Saturday afternoon.

Shippensburg showed life on offense first, ripping two shots at goal in the first minute of the game, with one being sent wide and one being stopped by junior Nicole Gray for her first save of the day. Frostburg responded with two shots of their own in their first try at offense, with sophomore Neila Haney and graduate Maura O'Neill being denied by the goalie. On a man-up opportunity, Haney scored the first goal of the game off an assist from junior Julia Badolato for a 1-0 Bobcat lead. FSU put up a fight on defense to deny the Raiders, as over the nine minutes, O'Neill caused three turnovers, sophomore Isabelle Kelly caused one, and Gray was credited with another save. SU was finally able to sneak one in goal at the 2:43 mark, tying the game at one apiece. On the very next play, junior Kerri Hayes picked up the draw control, setting the offense up as sophomore Emily Lamoreaux found Haney for a 2-1 Frostburg advantage. With nine seconds left in the first quarter, Shippensburg found the back of the net again to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the second quarter.

FSU took two shots to start off the second, with the Bobcat defense forcing two SU turnovers. FSU stepped in front 3-2 around five and a half minutes in, as senior Camden DeMaio put one in the back of the net. Frostburg continued to have the edge on offense, not allowing the Raiders to have a look at goal, as over the next few minutes, Badolato, DeMaio, and sophomore Syndey Stone all tried to increase FSU's lead but were all denied or put the ball wide. With 4:22 left in the half, Shippensburg was able to get their first shot off in the second, aiming just wide, then in response to another shot from Badolato, the Raiders marched down the field to tie the game at 3-3 with 2:23 left in the half. That goal sparked some fire in Shippensburg, tacking on another goal not even two minutes later on a man-up opportunity for a 4-3 lead. To end the half, the Raiders put one more in goal, finding themselves up 5-3 heading into the break.

The Bobcats took three tries at goal to kick off the third quarter, before Haney found her opportunity, slicing the ball into the back of the net for a man-up goal and 5-4 game. SU responded right away, scoring back-to-back goals to jump ahead 7-4. After FSU called a timeout, the offense was able to put something together, as senior Anna Kearney found Haney cutting through the middle for another man-up goal and a 7-5 score. For almost the next four minutes, both teams coughed up shots and turnovers, as Lamoreaux got on the board with a goal off a feed from sophomore Daniella Boss, bringing the Bobcats within one 7-6. Stone and Kelly both caused turnovers by SU, before Shippensburg was able to successfully keep the ball and put it in the back of the net to increase their lead to 8-6 with 1:59 left in the third. Both teams fired a shot at goal to end the quarter as Gray earned another save, as the Raiders kept their 8-6 lead heading into the fourth and final quarter.

Frostburg came out firing to start the fourth, as Hayes scored back-to-back goals for the Bobcats to tie the game at 8-8. Gray denied SU trying to take the lead, as Kelly was able to cause another turnover on the defensive end. Both teams traded turnovers, trying to find something on offense, as Kearney found graduate Lilly Stephens for a goal and a 9-8 FSU lead with 4:11 remaining in regulation. The Bobcats were not done yet, as Hayes secured another goal off a free position, knotting a hat trick on the day. Once again, Gray was able to shut down Shippensburg before the Raiders were able to slip one by to bring the score to 10-9 with 1:12 left. With time winding down, DeMaio sealed the deal for Frostburg putting the ball in the back of the net with 11 seconds left off an assist from Haney, allowing FSU to come out on top 11-9.

Haney led the way on offense for the Bobcats scoring four goals and dishing out one assist for five points, which put her at 100 points for her Frostburg career. She also picked up seven draw controls and two ground balls. Hayes finished with three goals and three draw controls, as on defense Kelly caused five turnovers and scooped up five ground balls, with O'Neill also causing five turnovers and finding herself with three ground balls. Gray finished the game with 10 saves and the win.

With the win, FSU improves to 2-1, while Shippensburg goes to 1-1. The Bobcats remain at home for their next game, welcoming in Shepherd on Wednesday, March 6 at 5 PM. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
