PARK CITY, Kan. – The Frostburg state men's wrestling program finished its season with two student-athletes at the NCAA DII Championships, as junior Thierno Diallo earned All-American in the 133 weight class while freshman Gavin Bage competed at 285 lbs.
In the first year bringing back the men's wrestling program after a long hiatus, the Bobcats saw plenty of success throughout the season. Having two wrestlers make the NCAA DII Championships was a great ending for head coach Josh Hutchens' in his first season at the helm of the program.
Seeded as the eighth-ranked wrestler at his weight class in the country, Diallo won his opening round matchup by decision 15-10, building an early lead and fighting off an attempted comeback by his opponent. In the quarterfinal matchup, he faced eventual national champion and top seed Gabe Hixenbaugh, losing by major decision 11-1. He responded from his first loss by winning his consolation match 14-13, using a last-second takedown to seal the victory and guaranteeing him All-American honors. Fighting for a spot in the consolation semifinals, his tournament came to a close through injury, as he placed eighth overall in the competition. He ended his season with an impressive 24-6 record, the second-most wins on the team and the best winning percentage for FSU.
Bage faced off against eventual finals participant and fourth-ranked Juan Edmond Holmes in his opening match, losing by pinfall. In the consolation bracket, he lost in a close match 5-0 by decision, finishing his first year of college wrestling at 19-10, tied for the program's third-highest win total.
Overall Frostburg finished with 4.5 team points, putting them 33rd in the championships at the time of writing. They finished the season with a team record of 14-13, two qualifiers for national championships and one All-American. For more information visit frostburgsports.com
