GLENVILLE, W. Va. -Â Â The Frostburg State Softball team split a pair of games on the road Sunday, as the Bobcats lost to Gannon 9-8 before beating Slippery Rock 6-3.
Frostburg faced off against Gannon in the first game of the day, as the Bobcats started senior Jamie Roberts in the circle. Roberts would have a solid first inning, striking out two for a short first at-bat for Gannon. FSU got on the board first when junior Hanna Binek crossed the plate after getting on base with a single. The Bobcats added their second run in the third inning on a RBI double from sophomore Olivia Stetler that would score junior Samara Funk, who was walked.Â
In the fourth FSU would strike again, as with a runner in scoring position, junior Cristina Sommerkamp knocked a double to left to make the score 3-0, as senior Brianna Munday crossed the plate after getting on board with a bunt single. Roberts would run into her first trouble of the game in the bottom of the fourth, as the Golden Knights cut into FSU's lead making the score 3-2. Gannon took their first lead of the game, keeping their offensive momentum going, hitting a three-run homer over the outfield fence to go up 5-3 in the bottom half of the fifth.
Frostburg didn't take long to answer, as in the next inning the Bobcats would retake the lead scoring five runs. Binek scored on a wild pitch after working around the bases after receiving a walk, as sophomore Gracie Nelson knocked in Sommerkamp to tie things up on a single. Roberts helped out her own cause with an RBI single to left, allowing FSU to retake the lead. Stetler added two more runs for the Bobcats on a single down the line, increasing FSU's lead to 8-5.Â
Junior Allyssa Albright replaced Roberts on the mound in the bottom of the sixth, looking to close things out. Gannon was able to capitalize, finding their rhythm, scoring three runs to tie the game at 8-8. FSU had a chance to go up in the seventh with Binek getting on base with a single, but was called out at the plate trying to score the go-ahead run. Gannon got a base runner on to start the bottom half of the inning, sending her home to take the 9-8 walkoff victory.Â
In game two, the Bobcats faced off in an evening matchup against Slippery Rock, with senior Sydney Theobald getting the ball for FSU. The Rock jumped out to an early lead putting up one run in the top of the first. Frostburg got the bats going early on, with two straight singles from junior Samara Funk and Nelson. Roberts then hit a sacrifice fly to even things up at one, scoring Funk. Nelson would come around to score as well in the inning, giving Frostburg the 2-1 lead after the first.Â
The back and forth would continue between the teams, as SRU added two more runs, reclaiming the lead at 3-2 to start the second. Funk would tie things on an RBI single making things 3-3 heading into the third. Theobald kept Slippery Rock quiet in the third, allowing FSU to retake the lead in their offensive half of the inning after a Roberts double that was followed up by a RBI double from senior Ryann Darling for a 4-3 game.Â
Theobald continued her success from the circle, seeing the minimum over the next two innings. The Bobcats extended their lead in the fifth, as Sommerkamp added an insurance run, knocking in Munday after she doubled. Frostburg added one more run in the sixth to go up 6-3, as Funk was walked and sent around the bases to score on a passed ball. Theobald gave up one hit in the top of the seventh, stranding two to take the 6-3 win for FSU. Â
Nelson led the Bobcats offensively for the day collecting four hits, two runs, and one RBI, as Munday and Sommerkamp finished with three hits each combining for three runs and two RBI. Funk scored a team-high four total runs, while also going for two hits and one RBI. With the victory in game two, Theobald earned her third win of the season. Â
