WILSON, NC – The Frostburg State Softball team ended their four-game weekend, falling to Barton 3-2 and defeating West Chester 4-1 on Sunday morning.
The first two innings of the first game were quick, with just two singles between the sides the only offense of note. The top of the third is when the action started. as sophomore Arden Miller had a solo homer into left-center for a 1-0 Bobcat lead. Into the bottom of the third, FSU's defense put the Bulldogs down 1-2-3. Adding to the score, sophomore Olivia Stelter hit a bomb over the centerfield fence, with Frostburg up 2-0 going into the fifth, then into the sixth.
Barton got their first score after reaching on an error and and a two-out RBI single to cut the deficit in half. The Bobcat offense couldn't get an insurance run in the top of the seventh, which came back to bite after the Bulldogs drew a two-out walk, then the next batter hit one out for a walk-off 3-2 victory.
Game two against WCU began with junior Samara Funk singling and stealing second. Sophomore Gracie Nelson hit a triple up the middle, sending Funk across home plate. Senior Jamie Roberts kept the rally going with an RBI groundout, plating Nelson to give FSU a quick 2-0 lead. With senior Sydney Theobald in the circle for the second game, she worked quickly through the first two innings, then was able to get out of trouble in the third, fourth, and fifth to keep the Golden Rams off the board.
Once again, Funk got a hit to lead off the bottom of the fifth, then advanced to second on a sac bunt from Nelson. Roberts stepped up and knocked one out of the park, giving FSU a 4-0 lead going to the sixth. West Chester earned their one and only run in the top of the frame after three singles and a walk, but sophomore Allyssa Albright shut the door with a pop up and stirkeout to end the threat. She went on to close the game in the seventh, setting the Golden Rams down in order for the 4-1 victory.
Theobald and Albright combined for seven innings of work, allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out five.
With the conclusion of the weekend split, Frostburg moves to an overall record of 2-2. FSU is back in action on Saturday, February 24 as they take on West Virginia Tech and Slippery Rock in Glenville, WV. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
