CHARLESTON, W.Va – The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team defeated Charleston (WV) in their first MEC road game of the season with a 73-57 victory on Wednesday night.
Â
Frostburg got active early, with sophomore Jenna Muha picking off the first pass of Charleston's possession and running down court to secure an easy two-point bucket in the paint for the first points of the game for either team. UC knocked down a shot on their next trip down the floor, as both teams swapped scores once more with senior Emilee Weakley getting her first points of the night.  The Golden Eagles then soared for a quick 10-0 run to jump ahead 14-4 right around the midway mark. Out of a FSU timeout, Muha was fouled on her put-back attempt, sending her to the free throw line, where she ended UC's run with two free points. Charleston moved down the court quickly and scored again, before graduate Sarah Shamdeen and sophomore Grace Middleton were each credited with a layup to see the score at 16-10. Muha and Weakley then tallied back-to-back scores to continue the Bobcat's run, bringing them within two, before the Golden Eagles saw five consecutive points to jump in front 21-14. Senior Taylor Smith ended the quarter with five points of her own, including a three at the buzzer to sit the game at 21-19 after the first.Â
Â
Both teams saw a slow start to the second, as UC laid in the first points with just around three minutes gone in the quarter. Frostburg then responded with a six point run, off points from Muha, Shamdeen, and Weakley, putting the Bobcats in front 25-23. The Golden Eagles quickly tied the game at 25, before FSU put together a 9-0 run for a commanding 34-25 lead with 1:42 left in the half, with Muha, Weakley, and sophomore Alanna Tate being credited with scores. Charleston tallied one more bucket to end the quarter, sending the game into the break with Frostburg on top 34-27.Â
Â
FSU kept the same momentum to kickoff the third, taking the first five points of the quarter off a layup from Weakley and another trey from Smith. Weakley traded buckets with UC for a 41-29 game, before the Golden Eagles saw a pair of buckets. Smith assisted Weakley for a shot from outside the arch, as nothing was stopping the Bobcats. Around the halfway mark of the quarter, Charleston was able to get their deficit to under double digits, before an 11-0 run from FSU put the game at 55-38. UC saw two more scores to end the quarter, as Weakley and Smith continued to add to Frostburg's lead for a 58-42 Bobcat advantage heading into the fourth and final quarter.Â
Â
Charleston opened the fourth with six straight points to get within 10, before Weakley knocked down a jumper for FSU's first points of the quarter. The Golden Eagles started to rally, seeing two more scores to get within seven with around 6:31 left in regulation. Freshman Julie Spinelli then saw four big points for the Bobcats to push their lead back to double digits with a 64-53 game. Senior Jasmine Johnson exchanged baskets underneath to keep Frostburg ahead by 11, before a jumper from Middelton saw the game with a 68-55 score. Johnson racked up a point on offense from the free throw line, followed by a block and a steal on the defensive end, as Weakley and Smith both went two-for-two from the charity stripe to finish out the 73-57 victory for FSU.Â
Â
Weakley led all scorers with 23 points on the night, while Muha (15) and Smith (13) both joined her double figures. Johnson led the team in rebounds with eight, while both Weakley and Muha racked up six. Weakley and Smith dished out a team-high four assists each.Â
