FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team took down the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State on Saturday afternoon with a 98-73 final.
West Virginia State got the game rolling with a quick layup in the paint off the jump ball, before freshman Julie Spinelli laid in Frostburg's points of the game on the other end. Senior Emilee Weakley and graduate Sarah Shamdeen put in the next two scores for the Bobcats to push them ahead 6-2, before a trey from the Yellow Jackets brought them within one. FSU remained in front with sophomore Jenna Muha connecting on her first points of the day, as a three from Weakley advanced FSU in front 13-8 around the midway mark. A slow two minutes helped WVSU take the lead with a 14-13 game, until Shamdeen sunk one from deep to put Frostburg back in the lead. Both teams swapped buckets to end the quarter, until a three from West Virginia State helped them into the lead for a 19-18 game after the first.
A three from Spinelli got the second quarter going, as a free throw from sophomore Alanna Tate put FSU in the lead 22-19. The Bobcats put up 12 more straight points to see a 34-19 game, before the Yellow Jackets were finally able to secure their first points of the quarter around the 5:07 mark. WVSU saw another jumper go, before senior Taylor Smith scored five points of her own to increase FSU's advantage to 39-23. Everything continued to go right for Frostburg on both ends of the court, as Weakley captured back-to-back buckets, nailing a three from deep to see a 17-point game. Spinelli and Muha put in the final two scores of the half for the Bobcats, seeing a 47-32 lead at the break.
Both teams swapped a few buckets to start the third, with Weakley and Shamdeen seeing scores for FSU. WVSU soared for a 12-point run to get the game within four, before a layup from Weakley ended Frostburg's drought. Another jumper from Weakley started another spark for the Bobcats, as FSU took the next five points. A three from Spinelli increased their lead back up to 15, as another layup from Weakley saw the game back up to 67-50. The Yellow Jackets knotted one more bucket to end the quarter, as scores from Tate and Weakley gave Frostburg a 20-point lead heading into the fourth and final quarter.
The Bobcats kept their momentum entering the fourth, continuing their spark on both ends of the court. WVSU saw the first points, until Tate responded with a three. Both teams once again traded points back and forth, but Weakley helped keep Frostburg ahead by a 20-point margin. West Virginia State brought the game to 78-61, but Weakley and Muha both captured buckets underneath the basket to push the score to 82-61. Everyone continued to stay in on the scoring action, with Shamdeen knocking down another triple and Muha seeing another two points from underneath. Weakley saw two perfect trips from the free throw line to advance the score to 92-64 with around 3:58 left in regulation, as a following lay-in from Weakley put the game at a 30-point margin for Frostburg's largest lead of the night. Freshmen Laekyn Flinn and Ayla Hileman tallied the final points of the day for FSU, ending the game with a 98-73 final.
Weakley led all scorers with a season-high 40 points shooting 14-for 24 from the floor and 10-for-11 from the free throw line. Spinelli was next, also seeing a season-high in points with 16, while grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out four assists. Tate saw 14 points and four rebounds, while Shamdeen finished with 10 points and Muha provided nine points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
With the win, Frostburg improves to 6-3 on the season, while West Virginia State drops to 5-2. The Bobcats remain at home for their next contest, facing Concord on Wednesday, December 11 at 5:30 PM. For more information and updates, please visit frostbrugsports.com.
