FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team struck first but was unable to hold on to their lead Wednesday evening, falling to Davis & Elkins 2-1.Â
Â
Frostburg put up the first shot of the game just two minutes in, when sophomore Hugo Portillo fired away at goal, sending the ball into the hands of D&E's keeper. After back and forth play for the next couple minutes, Davis & Elkins took over possession, finding their momentum on the offensive side, earning three corner kicks and putting up eight consecutive shots. FSU struggled to put together runs down field, as the Senators continued to move the ball around, setting themselves up in the box to try and put a score on the board. Freshman Jan Foret picked up saves on two shots from D&E, keeping the game scoreless around the halfway mark of the first.
Â
The Bobcats started to work together on offense, maintaining possession to set themselves up for a try at goal. The ball was battled around in the box, as senior Abdur-Rahman Neama put his foot on the ball, trying to fire it away up top, but sent it a little too high as it hit the crossbar. As the ball came back into play, junior Nick Varkarotas attempted to slot in the rebound but sent it out left. Each team swapped a shot as time started to tick down in the half, but with just under three minutes left to play before the break, freshman Andrew Denard sent in a low steamer into the left corner of the goal, putting FSU on top 1-0 at the half.Â
Â
Neama looked for a score to start the second, followed by senior Laki Psallidas trying one as well, both which were sent off target. Frostburg then earned a corner kick, as senior Zach Harpel controlled the ball and headed it just over top the goal, with the ball just skimming the woodwork. Both teams got a little ahead of themselves on offense, each being called for offsides. Moments after, Davis & Elkins timed everything perfectly, finding the game tying goal just over 12 minutes into the second half.Â
Â
Now with a 1-1 score, both teams pushed and pressed up field, looking for the go-ahead goal. The Bobcats secured two shots compared to the Senator's one over the next span of minutes, but with 20 minutes left on the clock, D&E sent in another strike that found the back of the net, putting them up 2-1. FSU put together two very well executed plays that set the ball at the feet of junior Carlos Quintero Rivas, who put both attempts just too high and over the net. With time winding out in favor of Davis & Elkins, the Bobcats rushed the field with everything they had, trying to tie the game at two apiece. Harpel saw another attempt at goal, but also put it just high. The frustration started to show for FSU with multiple fouls being exchanged to the end the game, as the clock favored D&E, helping the Senators capture the 2-1 victory.Â
Â
Davis & Elkins held the edge in shots 15-13, as well as in corner kicks 5-1. Foret finished with three saves in goal.  Â
Â
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 6-3-1 on the season, while Davis & Elkins moves to 5-3-2. The Bobcats remain at home for their next contest, hosting Concord on Saturday, October 12 at 2 PM for Parents Cookout. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.Â
