Mountain Lions Hold Firm on Defense to Defeat Men's Soccer 2-0

FROSTBURG, Md. – Concord goalkeeper Nathan Scargill and a pair of second half goals led to a 2-0 victory over the Frostburg State Men's Soccer team on Saturday afternoon.

After CU held possession in the FSU half but not generating many chances, the Bobcats made a push upfield, where sophomore Hugo Portillo unleashed a shot from the top corner of the 18 that was tipped over by Scargill. Two minutes later, a deflected ball bounced towards senior Abdur-Rahman Neama, as he tried to volley towards goal but went high and wide of the mark. Much of the rest of the first half went without much being created, as the Mountain Lions ended things with a tame effort saved by freshman Jan Foret to go into the break.

Portillo had another shot that went wide to start the second half, with Concord returning the favor six minutes later. With just over 10 minutes gone, CU was awarded a corner kick, which was whipped in by Ted Roberts and missed by three Frostburg players, crossing the line before it could be cleared for the game's opening goal. The Bobcats swiftly went in search of an equalizer, as senior Caleb Dell shot high and freshman Mason Salvadge missed wide.

FSU thought they had the tying goal with just under 20 minutes gone, as senior Alex Retzos curled a ball from outside the box into the top corner, but Scargill flew across to get a hand on the ball and keep it out. Senior Zach Harpel then headed a ball into the ground that Scargill also was equal to. The saves proved instrumental, as the Mountain Lions won a 50-50 ball at midfield, with Richard Henry feeding a ball into the box for Fabian Amhof to run onto, as he slotted home from a narrow angle under the onrushing Foret to put it at a two-goal cushion.

Frostburg continued to press for their opener, as junior Carlos Quintero Rivas had Scargill beaten but saw the ball come off the crossbar and out. Portillo then forced another great save, with Dell getting a chance on the resulting corner, as his volley was tipped onto the post by Scargill, with junior Nick Varkarotas unable to slot in the rebound. With the game rounding down to the final five minutes, junior Gabe Jones had one last chance for the Bobcats, but once again Scargill prevented the score, sealing the visitors' 2-0 victory.

FSU held an 18-4 advantage in shots, with five on target to Concord's three.

With the loss, Frostburg drops to 6-4-1 on the year, while CU improves to 7-2-2. The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday, October 16 for a road match against Salem (WV). Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
