FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team took down Salem (WV) at home by a final score of 7-0.
Â
It took less than two minutes for the Bobcats to get on the board, as freshman Mollie Rebuck led a high press, winning the ball just outside the 18 and curling a shot in for the opener. Less than four minutes later, junior Mary Greco tossed a long throw into the box that classmate Morgan Mrizek was the first to latch onto, smartly turning and firing home for a 2-0 lead within the first five.
Â
Over the next 22 minutes, FSU peppered the Tigers' goal with shot after shot, totaling 13 within the timeframe. Senior Mackenzie Alonso came the closest to scoring, as she saw her effort go just off the top of the crossbar, while Sarah Cabrera made seven saves in the SU net. With just under 20 minutes to go in the half, Salem was awarded a free kick, which was well-defended by FSU, leading to a counter-attack where junior Carly Gillette broke through midfield, seeing her effort saved before freshman Elena Fernandez tapped in the rebound.
Â
Seniors Carolyn DeSena and Cat Smith each drew saves from Cabrera, then Fernandez made a run down the right wing and cut into the box, where the ball eventually found junior Hannah Clagett for a curling shot saved by Cabrera, who could only tip right into the path of freshman Cassidy Paige for a 4-0 lead. Freshman Ellie Fiedler nearly tacked on another in the final five minutes, as her long-range effort cannoned back off the bar, then Clagett ended the half with a shot saved by Cabrera.
Â
Similar to how the match started, Frostburg was in high gear to start the second 45, as sophomore Chelsea Pettyjohn first had a shot on goal before turning provider to classmate Grace Sarver, who was able to get free in the box and fire into the bottom corner for FSU's fifth. Sarver and freshman Rayiah Davis drew a combined three saves from Cabrera over the next 10 minutes, as the Tigers were unable to break out of their own half.
Â
Salem's keeper made a further four saves before Clagett arced a high shot that Cabrera got a hand on but couldn't keep out to put the lead at six. Freshman Madison Hobson worked down the right side and hit the crossbar once again, then junior Hannah Lebo tested Cabrera before Pettyjohn played a ball through the lines to Davis to slot home the Bobcats' seventh and final tally.
Â
FSU held SU without a shot, while firing off 48 and forcing 19 saves from Cabrera.
Â
With the win, Frostburg improves to 11-2-1, while Salem drops to 0-14. The Bobcats next travel to Point Park on Saturday, October 26 for an 11 a.m. match. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
