PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team was held to a 1-1 draw on the road against Point Park on Saturday.
Â
FSU struggled to find the target early, as they fired off five shots in the first 15 minutes, but two were blocked and three were off target. Junior Morgan Mrizek had the first effort on goal, a quick turn from outside the box right at keeper Frederieke Rijlaardsam. Neither side created many chances over the next half hour, with the Bobcats missing a pair of shots wide.
Â
The Pioneers found the footing in the final 10 minutes of the half, drawing a pair of saves from senior keeper Katie Sterne, the latter of which was fired back in from the corner of the 18 by Cara Spry and into the back of the net for a shock 1-0 lead. PPU also had the first shot of the second half, as a ball came in from out wide that Sterne was alert to. Frostburg had three chances over the course of eight minutes, but once more were unable to trouble Rijlaardsam.
Â
After 18 minutes and three FSU shots going high, freshman Mollie Rebuck was finally able to get the Bobcats on the board, being the first to react to a loose ball following a corner and bundling the ball over the line to tie things at 1-1. After each team missed an effort high and wide, junior Carly Gillette came close to netting a go-ahead off a free kick, but her header was pounced on by Rijlaardsam with nine minutes to go. Junior Mary Greco and senior Cat Smith both tried to score a winner in the final three minutes, but neither could test the PPU netminder to end honors even.
Â
FSU held a 21-9 advantage in shots, but only four on target to the hosts' five.
Â
With the draw, Frostburg moves to 11-2-2 on the year, while Point Park is now 2-8-5. The Bobcats remain on the road to face Wheeling on Wednesday, October 30 for a 4 p.m. match. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
