Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Solid Team Effort Gives Men's Soccer Much Needed Win Over Wesleyan

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team defeated West Virginia Wesleyan by a final score of 3-1 on Wednesday evening.

Both teams saw a battle of possession to open the game, with neither team really seeing a try at offense until Wesleyan received a corner kick 14 minutes in but were unable to put up a shot.  Just under the 20 minute mark, both teams traded their first shots of the game, with freshman Mason Salvadge seeing the first attempt for Frostburg, and Wesleyan putting their first try on goal in the hands of FSU's goalkeeper freshman Jan Foret.  Frostburg then started to take over the ball, moving it around to set up a handful of shots.  Senior Caleb Dell saw a try that resulted in a FSU corner kick, that set senior Alex Retzos up perfectly for a header into the left side of the net, but a WVWC defender was able to knock it out of play just in time for a team save.  Junior Carlos Quintero Rivas and senior Mateo Cuadros each then sent in a chance at goal, both being sent off target.

With over half the time gone in the first, the game remained scoreless as Frostburg looked to break the ice with another attempt from Cuadros that was saved by Wesleyan's keeper.  Just over a minute later, marching down field, perfect short passes led to senior Abdur-Rahman Neama slipping the ball in the box to freshman Dominic Good, who was able to find the back of the net for a 1-0 score.  FSU took that momentum, looking to extend their lead, as the team showed three straight shots that were just aimed out of play.  With under five left to go in the half, WVWC was able to tie things up on a free kick that was sent into the box and found the net off two Wesleyan touches.  Just two minutes later, Frostburg put themselves back on top, as Good sent in a corner kick that found the head of Dell, as he played behind him to freshman Christian Mathieu, who was able to send it in off his head for a 2-1 FSU lead heading into the break.

WVWC was awarded a pair of corner kicks to start the second but were unable to get anything out of it.  Dell and sophomore Hugo Portillo sent tries in at goal, looking to increase Frostburg's lead even more, but were unable to connect.  With over 15 minutes gone in the half, Cuadros lined up to send a free kick inside the 10, putting it in the right side of the box for Dell to head to Retzos, who guided the ball in with his right foot for a 3-1 FSU advantage.

Both teams slowed down their offensive game for the next dozen minutes, until Wesleyan sent in two more chances a goal, one that was saved by Foret and one that was sent wide.  WVWC then received a corner kick, with FSU taking the ball down field off the inbound and setting up freshman Andrew Denard for a strike that was just over top the crossbar.  Wesleyan set themselves up for three more chances over the next few minutes but were unable to get anything to go.  As time ticked down, Good and senior Laki Psallidas fired in shots that hit off the woodwork for Frostburg, leaving the final score at 3-1 with FSU coming out on top.

Frostburg dominated the shot category with 17 compared to Wesleyan's nine, while WVWC took the edge in corner kicks 7-4.  Foret finished with two saves on the night.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 7-6-1 on the season, while Wesleyan drops to 4-8-2.  FSU goes on the road next for a two-game road span, starting with Point Park on Saturday, October 26 at 1:30 PM.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
