PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team won its second straight game and evened the series up against Point Park on the year, taking the close contest 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Coming off a home win against Wesleyan, Frostburg has two straight road games before the regular season conclusion at home on senior day. Freshman Jan Foret got the start in the net for Frostburg and saw work early from Point Park. Foret saw three shots in the first twelve minutes and picked up two saves. FSU had the first corner of the day 16 minutes into the game, finding senior Caleb Dell, but he was unable to put the shot on frame. FSU continued to build momentum, forcing Point Park's goalie to make two saves. The Bobcats and Pioneers would play the last 15 minutes of the first half even, with Point Park taking one shot, sending the game into halftime tied at 0-0.
FSU planned things perfectly at the break, coming out of the half and scoring a minute in after a long ball from Dell was headed to sophomore Hugo Portillo up the right side, who found junior Carlos Quintero Rivas on a near post run. Rivas finished with his right foot, with a defender on his hip to make the score 1-0.
The Bobcats flirted with a second goal moments later on a crossed ball at the back post, fended off by a late defender. Senior Mateo Cuadros again tried to increase FSU's lead after his last shot was denied, but again, the Pioneers were able to make a save on it. Senior Abdur-Rahman Neama fired away a shot as well, prior to four other Bobcats trying to add to the team's lead, but all were unable to do so. Foret would keep the Pioneers off the board, making six saves to keep FSU on top. The Bobcats celebrated as the final whistle blew for the 1-0 win.
Point Park held the slight advantage in shots with 17 compared to Frostburg's 14, while FSU led in shots on goal with nine. Foret finished with eight saves on the day.
With the win, Frostburg moves to 8-6-1 on the season, while Point Park falls to 5-9-1. The Bobcats next play at Wheeling on Wednesday, October 30 at 7 PM. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
