SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team defeated Shepherd in their first road game of the season by a score of 4-2 on Wednesday evening.
The Rams got things started very quickly on offense, scoring just under three minutes into the game. After fouls were called on both teams, junior Alex Retzos took Frostburg's first shot of the game, looking to tie things up, but missed wide left. The Bobcats took another shot 28 minutes in, with that one being saved by the goalie, before Retzos put one in the back of the net off a pass from junior Laki Psallidas, tying the game at one apiece. Shepherd's offense quieted down, only taking one shot to finish the half. FSU stayed aggressive on offense, firing three more shots, but just missing, leaving the game 1-1 at the break.
Frostburg turned up the aggressiveness to start the second half, earning themselves three fouls, while Shepherd took three shots. Retzos fired another shot at the goal 10 minutes into the second, finding the back of the net once more for a 2-1 Bobcat lead. With everything going right on offense, FSU added to their lead, as just four minutes later sophomore Carlos Quintero Rivas found freshman Hugo Portillo for a 3-1 score.
Shepherd made a switch in goal with 30 minutes left in regulation, with sophomore Anthony Ibarra, graduate Alex Flores, and Portillo firing quick three shots on goal. The Rams responded with two offensive runs of their own at goal, but were unable to capitalize. After two more shots, Frostburg earned themselves a penalty kick, with senior Alex Grasso getting the job done, increasing FSU's lead.
With multiple shots from Shepherd, graduate Joel Assal made a trio of saves, keeping the score 4-1 in favor of Frostburg. The Rams got one goal back with five minutes left, due to a penalty kick of their own. FSU's defense was able to get the job done late on, allowing the game to end 4-2 in favor of the Bobcats.
FSU finished the game leading in shots 19-14, as well as corner kicks at 4-1. Assal made a total of seven saves in goal.
With the win, Frostburg moves to 2-1 on the season, while Shepherd falls to 1-2. The Bobcats will remain on the road, as they travel to face Salem (WV) on Sunday, September 10 at 3:30 PM. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
