FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team lost a tight contest at home to West Virginia Wesleyan by a score of 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.Â

Frostburg came out firing to start the game, with senior Alex Grasso ripping a shot just right of the goal, resulting in an FSU corner kick. FSU worked to take the next three shots of the game, before Wesleyan was able to get their foot on the ball for their first shot. With both teams fighting for possession, four yellow cards were called in the first half, along with eight fouls. Both teams put up solid efforts in the first 45 minutes of play, with Frostburg leading in shots, saves, and corner kicks, but the score remained 0-0 at the break.Â

The second half started with high tensions, with both teams earning a foul. Sophomore Carlos Quintero Rivas recorded the first shot of the half, shooting over top of the goal. Junior Alex Retzos ripped a shot goal, sending the ball high as well. WVWC earned themselves two corner kicks, attempting a shot on goal in between, but were unable to capitalize. With under 20 minutes left to play, both teams got a little chippy, as cards were given to both teams once more. Frostburg had three straight looks at goal, earning themselves a corner, but were still unable to put the ball in the back of the net.Â

After four tremendous saves in the first half by graduate Joel Assal, Weselyan was able to sneak one in the back of the net with seven minutes left to play for a 1-0 lead. FSU scrambled to get the goal back, earning themselves a corner with under a minute left, but fell just short, falling with a final of 1-0. Assal finished the day with seven saves, as Frostburg recorded 14 shots.

With the loss, FSU goes to 1-1 on the season, while WVWC also moves to 1-1. Frostburg will go on the road for their next matchup, facing Shepherd on Wednesday, September 6 at 3:30 PM. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.  Â
