WHEELING, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team defeated Wheeling on the road Wednesday evening by a final score of 2-0.
Frostburg wasted no time getting on the board, with sophomore Carols Quintero Rivas knotting a rocket into the back of the net on the first shot of the game, just under six minutes in, for a quick 1-0 Bobcat lead. Around six minutes later, Wheeling put together their first two shots of the game, both going off target. In response, junior Abdur-Rahman Neama found himself with the ball and a chance at goal, missing over top the frame. Graduate Joel Assal earned himself his first save of the day off a shot from the Cardinals just over 18 minutes into play.
Both teams swapped fouls back and forth, neither getting a real shot at any offense. Wheeling ripped another shot at goal, firing out left, before FSU found themselves with a run down field, resulting in another goal from Quintero Rivas with the assist coming from sophomore Sebastian Vargas for a 2-0 Frostburg lead.
Quintero Rivas looked for another scoring opportunity eight minutes later but missed wide right. The Cardinals looked for one more opportunity to get on the board before the half, taking another try at goal, but hit the crossbar, as the Bobcats remained in the lead 2-0 heading into the break.
Wheeling quickly put a run together in their offensive half to start the second, quickly trying for a shot at goal 59 seconds in. The Cardinals took two more shot, with Assal standing tall and earning saves for both. Quintero Rivas found himself open once more, firing another shot at goal, this time on target, but was shut down by the goalkeeper. Finding themselves two corner kicks, FSU turned the ball over, which lead to two more shots from Wheeling, one missing wide and one ending up in the hands of Assal.
With each team now finding themselves with chances on offense, both teams traded shots, all being off target. Assal stopped a shot from the Cardinals once more with just over 25 minutes left to play, keeping the score 2-0. The Bobcats defense remained strong, only giving the Cardinals room for two more shots to end the game, both being off target, leading Frostburg to a 2-0 victory.
With the win, Frostburg moves to 5-4 on the season, while Wheeling drops to 0-7-1. The Bobcats will travel to face Davis & Elkins on Wednesday, October 4 at 7 PM for their next matchup. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
