FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team continued their win streak as they rolled to a 3-0 home victory over West Liberty on Wednesday night.
Â
Within the first five minutes, sophomore Carly Gillette forced an excellent save from Zara Wickert in goal, who dove to her left to make the save. Senior Dez Mortimer and junior Madi Allen both also had shots saved before the 10-minute mark, as FSU controlled the majority of scoring chances.
Â
The Bobcats broke through on 12 minutes when a ball was cleared just outside the box and found senior Hannah Thompson, who took a touch onto her left foot and guided the ball into the lower right corner for a 1-0 lead and her first goal of the season. Gillette came close again four minutes later on Wickert's best save of the match, tipping the goal-bound effort onto the bar and limiting the damage to a corner. Just 30 seconds later, junior Carolyn DeSena cannoned a shot off the crossbar as the advantage remained at one midway through the half.
Â
WLU grew into the game and limited many more clear-cut chances, as several of Frostburg's attempts went off-target. Thompson saw one last effort saved by Wickert two and a half minutes before the halftime whistle, as West Liberty wasn't able to get a shot off in the entire half.
Â
The Hilltoppers came out of the half motivated, earning an early corner and getting the ball forward regularly. Senior Toni Fiocco-Mizer had a great opportunity to double the lead, racing in behind WLU's defense and rounding Wickert, but couldn't bend her shot inside the post, as it went agonizingly wide. West Liberty followed up with their first attempt of the game, which took a deflection wide of goal for a corner, but nothing came of it as FSU defended capably.
Â
Fiocco-Mizer had an effort from distance saved by Wickert, diving to her left to keep the ball out and keep West Liberty still in the game. The Bobcats got the second goal they desired in the 72
nd minute, as they won the ball back high up the field, with sophomore Morgan Mrizek playing in freshman Madison Hinton, who unleashed a shot into the top of the net from just inside the 18 for her first collegiate goal and a 2-0 lead.
Â
With just over 10 minutes remaining, Allen sealed the victory after some great play from Mrizek to play senior Lela Clark into the box, who then crossed to the back post for an easy finish and a 3-0 score line. FSU saw out the rest of the game without much fuss, cruising to their sixth-straight win.
Â
Frostburg outshot the Hilltoppers 26-1, with 12 efforts on target to none for the visitors.
Â
With the victory, FSU improves to 6-0 on the year, while West Liberty falls to 2-3-1. The Bobcats next face Fairmont State in a rematch of the 2022 MEC Championship Game on Sunday, September 24 at 1 PM. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
