Defense Shuts Down Fairmont Attack in Women's Soccer Victory

FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team won their rematch of the 2022 MEC Championship Game against Fairmont State on Sunday afternoon by a score of 2-0.

The game started out a cagey affair, with each side figuring the other out, before junior Madi Allen got the Bobcats' first shot on the board, forcing keeper Delaney Haller into a save on seven and a half minutes. Frostburg controlled the tempo of the match, but found scoring chances hard to come by, with tame efforts from senior Foni Fiocco-Mizer and junior Carolyn DeSena straight at Haller 10 minutes apart. Freshman Madison Hinton blasted a ball that went wide, as the Bobcat defense held the Fighting Falcons without a first half shot, going into halftime with a 0-0 score.

Frostburg upped the tempo to start the second half, as DeSena and sophomore Cat Smith both shot wide of goal in the first three minutes. Senior Hannah Thompson was the next to test Haller, but her effort was straight at Fairmont's keeper. Fairmont got back into the game and limited the Bobcat attack over the next 10 minutes, with just a pair of senior Lela Clark shots going wide.

As the clock ticked down to a half hour left in regulation, DeSena whipped a ball into the box that was headed straight up by a Falcon defender, with Fiocco-Mizer the first to react, heading past Haller into an empty net for a 1-0 Frostburg lead. Just four minutes later, sophomore Carly Gillette went on a surging run through midfield, then sweetly hit a shot from the upper right of the 18 into the top left corner to double the Bobcat advantage.

With just under 14 minutes to go, Fairmont finally got away their first shots of the contest, with Isabella Maldonado and Tristen Bright both blazing their efforts over the bar. Junior Keely Knotts almost found herself on the score sheet, as Hinton crossed to the back post, where Knotts headed the ball over Haller, but came back off the crossbar. As the match wore down, the Falcons had just one more shot that again went high, with Frostburg's defense in control the rest of the way to take the victory.

The Bobcats had 12 shots to the Falcons' three, as well as seven on goal to none for the hosts.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 7-0 on the year, while Fairmont falls to 3-3-1. The Bobcats stay on the road to face Glenville State on Wednesday, September 27 at 7 p.m. Information and updates will be posted at frostburgsports.com.
