Crimson Hawks Down Field Hockey in Bobcat Stadium

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Field Hockey team fell at home to Indiana (Pa.), by a final score of 2-0 on Friday evening.

IUP started things off first offensively, earning themselves a penalty corner and finding room for a shot, but put it just wide of the cage. After multiple fouls were exchanged by both teams, the Crimson Hawks found themselves with another penalty corner, this time capitalizing, slicing the ball into the back of the cage for a 1-0 lead six minutes in. Frostburg took their first shot of the game with time winding down in the first quarter, as junior Macy Layfield ripped a shot that was saved by the goalie.

The Crimson Hawks started things offensively once more to start the second quarter, taking two quick shots that were both saved by sophomore Zoe Barnes. IUP was able to maintain possession, finding themselves with two more penalty corners and three more shots, with Barnes being credited with two more saves. FSU finally found the ball on their offensive half, putting two more shots at goal, with sophomore Paige Leitzel being denied and Layfield firing one wide. Both teams traded fouls once more, as IUP kept their 1-0 lead heading into the break.

Frostburg took the first shot of the third, with Layfield again being denied by the goalie. IUP responded with a shot of their own, again being denied by Barnes. After back and forth play, the Crimson Hawks took another penalty corner, resulting in a shot that was blocked. IUP regained possession for another penalty corner, resulting in two more tries at goal, as Barnes was credited with two more saves. With just under three minutes left in the third, the Crimson Hawks took advantage of the opportunity, scoring another for a 2-0 lead. The Bobcats took three penalty corners to end the period, but were unsuccessful on each one, as the score remained 2-0 heading into the fourth and final quarter.

Both teams opened the fourth aggressively, exchanging fouls for possession. IUP opened up play taking a shot at goal but left it out wide. The Crimson Hawks once again found themselves with possession, taking two more penalty corners and three shots, but were left empty handed. Junior Olivia Wenzel took a shot at goal, ending up with a penalty corner that would result in a shot from Leitzel, who ripped one high. The Bobcats found themselves with possession late in the game, taking another penalty corner and another shot, but were unable to capitalize. Within the final minutes, Frostburg looked for one more chance to get on the board, as junior Femke Hofkamp took a shot, but left it wide, as FSU fell with a final of 2-0.

With the loss, Frostburg moves to 4-2 on the season, while IUP improves to 3-1. The Bobcats will travel to play Millersville on Wednesday, September 20 at 6 PM. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
