Haney's Goals, Schniedwind's Assists Lead Women's Lacrosse to Home Win

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacosse team secured another MEC victory, defeating Charleston (WV) by a final score of 16-9 at home on Saturday afternoon.

FSU came out of the gate ready to play, knotting the first two goals of the contest as freshman Neila Haney found the back of the net at the 12:10 mark, followed by sophomore Julia Badalato connecting with a tally at the 9:02 mark. Charleston was able to bring the score to 2-1 just a minute and a half later, but the Bobcats turned up the momentum, scoring four straight goals to end the quarter. Junior Anna Kearney scored on an assist from Haney, as Haney would then knot her second of the day off a feed from senior Cammie Schniedwind. Sophomore Kerri Hayes then recorded two goals to end the first 15 minutes with Frostburg in front 6-1.

The Golden Eagles responded quickly to open the second, scoring the first two goals of the quarter to bring the game to 6-3. Freshman Dahlia Trippel got on the board with a solo goal, but immediately UC scored again 25 seconds later, then brought the deficit within two with 6:09 left in the half. After a timeout, FSU regained their composure, as junior Camden DeMaio sliced the ball past the goalkeeper for an 8-5 lead. Both teams exchanged a couple shots and turnovers, but neither could add to their score, allowing Frostburg to lead by three headed into the break.

Charleston scored the first goal of the second half just 53 seconds in, before FSU took control with another scoring run, tallying four goals to UC's zero to end the quarter. Haney secured a hat-trick at the 10:39 mark in the third off a dish from DeMaio, who then scored one of her own. Haney earned herself another goal, this time off a pass from Trippel, with the latter turnning around and getting her second of the day for a more comfortable 12-6 Bobcat lead at the end of three.

Schniedwind dished perfect passes inside to Haney and Trippel for two more Frostburg goals to start the fourth. The Golden Eagles quickly got one back before Hayes built the lead back up to eight with just under nine minutes left to play. Charleston scored two more in the quarter, before senior Lilly Stephens tacked on one more for the Bobcats, allowing Frostburg to walk away with the 16-9 victory.

Haney led the way on offense for FSU, finishing with five goals, an assist, and eight draw controls for a total of six points. Trippel and Hayes each finished with a hat-trick, as Schniedwind contributed a game-high three assists. Graduate Mackenzie Cramer led the defensive effort with a pair of caused turnovers and three groundballs.

With the win, Frostburg moves to 5-6 on the season, while UC falls to 4-7. The Bobcats will return to MEC action on Thursday, April 13 as they will travel to Davis & Elkins for a 6 PM start time. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
