Baseball Falls in Home Match-Up against California (Pa.)

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Baseball team dropped their midweek game to California University of Pennsylvania by a score of 14-1 at home on Wednesday afternoon.

Both teams started out slow in the first inning, with sophomore Hayden Ford getting three quick outs for Frostburg and sophomore Randy Steen recording a leadoff single, but was left stranded on base.  California (Pa.) got rolling in their next at-bats, scoring nine runs on seven hits. Junior Nate Vermillion came in to pitch late in the inning, getting out of a bases loaded jam to end the top of the second 9-0, in favor of Cal.  FSU was able to get two batters on to open their half of the inning, with sophomore Mikey Guy drawing a walk and senior Trevor Jones ripping a single to left field.  The Bobcats struggled to put anything else together, leaving two on.

The Vulcans kept things going in the third, tacking on one more run to their lead. Steen recorded his second hit of the day in the bottom of the third, being stranded on base once more.  Sophomore Ryan Adams came into pitch in the fourth, giving up zero hits and zero runs to leave the game at 10-0.  Junior Lucas Gulczynski earned the lone hit of the fourth for Frostburg, as two Bobcats were left on base.

Senior Jack Maruskin started things off on the mound for FSU to open up the fifth, earning himself three strikeouts, but giving up another run to the Vulcans.  Junior Justin Jimenez got that run back in Frostburg's at-bats of the fifth, sending a bomb to left field for the Bobcats first run of the day and an 11-1 game.

California (Pa.) tacked on two more runs to their lead in the sixth, for their final runs of the game.  Frostburg was hitless in the sixth and the seventh, as junior Ethan Kiple came into pitch in the seventh, fanning three batters and allowing the game to end in a 14-1 final.

Steen went 2-for-3 on the day as Jones, Kiple, Gulczynski, and Jimenez each recorded one hit apiece.

With the loss, Frostburg drops to 24-18 on the season while California (Pa.) moves to 21-18. The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, April 29 as they travel to take on Notre Dame (Ohio) in a two-day four-game conference series, with the first game of the series set to begin at 1 PM.
