FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team shut out Alderson Broaddus at home in historic fashion, with a final score of 32-0 on Tuesday afternoon.
Frostburg came out of the gate quickly, scoring a goal on the first possession just nine seconds into the game. Senior Bubba Love scored the first two goals for the Bobcats just over a minute and a half in for a quick 2-0 lead. Senior Owen McCallum knotted the third goal of the quarter for FSU off an assist from junior Austin Sipes, who would earn himself four more assists in the first. Junior Parker Masters and sophomore Alex Walstrum both found the back of the net before McCallum and senior Jake Bowman connected on two more goals, both on passes from Sipes. Frostburg did not back down, tallying six more goals to their lead. Graduate Matt Sharkey got in on the scoring action for the Bobcats eighth goal of the quarter, followed by senior Justin Hulse, graduate Jake Sprecher, and Sipes knotting their first, Bowman earning his second, and redshirt senior Tanner Donaldson recording his first as well, all for a 13-0 lead after one.
Masters got things going in the second for FSU, scoring off an assist from McCallum at the 13:34 mark. Bowman tallied his hat-trick off an assist from sophomore Blaine Karotko, followed by earning himself an assist on a perfect dish to senior Warren Evans for a quick 16-0 lead to open the quarter. FSU kept their foot on the gas entirely, tallying 10 more goals for another 13 goal quarter. Bowman added three more goals to his total, while Love, Sipes, and McCallum each knotted their hat-trick in the quarter. Hulse was credited for his second goal and junior Tyler Dooley got on the board with his first goal of the day, for a commanding 26-0 lead at the half.
FSU didn't slow down in the second half, as McCallum found the back of the net for the fourth time off a feed from senior Rob Tarver at the 10:27 mark. After six minutes of defense from both teams, junior Will Hollingsworth found room for two goals in just over a minute, with one coming off an assist from freshman Dan Rafferty, allowing the Bobcats to lead 29-0 heading into the final frame.
More tremendous passing and successful offense lead to three more goals for Frostburg, with Tarver getting things started midway through the fourth, ripping a ball past the goalie off a feed from Dooley. Walstrum earned his second goal of the day off a pass from freshman Shaun Gillispie, with senior Matt Begley tallying the final goal of the day with just under five minutes left to play, resulting in a 32-0 victory for the Bobcats.
With a terrific team effort, Sipes led the way with a total of 11 points, which tied the most points recorded in a single game on four goals and seven assists, which was also tied for second most
assists in a game. Bowman finished with six goals and two assists for a total of eight points, putting him at 77 points on the season, which is the most in Bobcat history. McCallum tallied up seven points with four goals and three assists, with Love finishing with a hat-trick of three goals and 11 other Bobcats recording at least one goal. A trio of goalkeepers saw time in goal, with graduate Mitch Meckley and freshman Aidan Pierce each recording a save, while sophomore Nate Jones made three in the shutout.
The team as a whole dished out 23 assists, a new program record, in addition to 55 total points, also a record. The 32 goals scored are the second-most all time, while the 32-goal winning margin is also the most in school history.
With the win, Frostburg improves to 11-4 on the season while Alderson Broaddus falls to 0-13. The Bobcats will remain at home as they will host Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday, April 29 at 1 PM for Senior Day as the regular season finale.
