WHEELING, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Softball team took both games in their doubleheader against Wheeling, with final scores of 5-3 and 9-0 on Sunday afternoon.
In game one, Frostburg got on the board in the top of the first inning as freshman Arden Miller reached base on a game opening walk, followed by junior Sierra Sanderson reaching on an error by Wheeling, both to be scored on a two-RBI double from senior Brianna Powell. Junior Ryann Darling brought Powell across the plate with a single up the middle to center field, allowing the Bobcats to hold a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first.
Wheeling went on to add their first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning, to cut Frostburg's lead to two. FSU opened the top of the third with a single up the middle from sophomore Jamie Roberts, as Darling got her second hit of the game, knocking a double into left field, advancing Roberts to third. Sophomore Adrianna Wimmer went on to grab two RBI, sending a single up the middle that would score both Roberts and Darling, allowing Frostburg to have a 5-1 lead.
The Cardinals went on to score a run in both the bottom of the fourth and a run in the bottom of the sixth, as the Bobcats remained silent on offense, but went on to take game one with a final score of 5-3.
Frostburg started off early once again, as in game two, Miller reached base on an opening single with Sanderson following right behind, reaching base on a successful bunt. Miller was able to score the Bobcats first run of the game coming home on a wild pitch, as Powell grounded out to second base, allowing Sanderson to score as well for an early 2-0 FSU lead. In the top of the second, junior Ellie Buckheit reached on a Cardinal error, as freshman Gracie Nelson added on a single to center field. Miller then doubled to right field to send both runners across the plate to extend the Bobcats lead to 4-0, heading into the bottom half of the inning.
In the top of the third, Darling earned a walk, followed with an RBI double into center field from Wimmer, to bring the fifth run across the plate for the Bobcats. Frostburg added another run in the top of the fourth, courtesy of a solo shot from Powell over the the left field fence, as FSU took a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning.
Junior Brianna Munday entered as a pinch hitter in the top of the fifth, as she reached base on a single into center field, and proceed to score on another Wheeling error. In the top of the sixth, Powell continued her tremendous offensive day with a double to left center, as Roberts reached on another Cardinal error, allowing Powell to cross the plate for an 8-0 lead. Wimmer reached on yet another error by Wheeling to send Roberts across the plate, bringing the game to 9-0 heading into the last at-bats for the Cardinals.
After pitching six perfect innings, the Cardinals finally earned themselves a hit off of Roberts, as the Bobcats would allow nothing else, taking the 9-0 victory in six innings.
With quite the day on offense, Miller, Powell, Roberts, Darling, and Wimmer all recorded three hits apiece, with Powell leading the way with four RBI. Junior Sydney Theobald earned her third win of the season in game one, throwing a complete seven innings giving up three runs on eight hits and striking out 10. Roberts knotted her eighth win of the season, throwing a one-hitter and fanning five in game two.
With the sweep, Frostburg improves to 19-10 on the season, while Wheeling falls to 6-24. The Bobcats will be back in action quickly, as they will travel to face West Liberty on Monday, April 3 for a doubleheader set to start at 1PM.
