Softball Gets Series Sweep against Glenville State with Walk-off

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Softball team picked up two home wins against Glenville State on Friday, winning the first game 3-0, and walking off the second with a final of 5-3 in the tenth inning.

In game one, the offense for Frostburg got going in the bottom of the second inning as sophomore Jamie Roberts led the inning off with a single.  Freshman Arden Miller and junior Ryann Darling also knocked in singles to load the bases for the Bobcats, as junior Katie Ernst hit the fourth single for FSU, allowing the first run to cross the plate for a 1-0 lead.  Junior Ellie Buckheit then got in one the offensive action, ripping an RBI single to left field, allowing FSU to jump out to a 2-0 lead heading into the third.

Junior Sydney Theobald kept Glenville quiet in the third, facing three batters for three quick outs, to then leave two Pioneers stranded on base in the fourth.  In the bottom of the fifth inning, Frostburg tacked on another run to their lead, as junior Sierra Sanderson opened the inning with a double to left center field, and would come around to score on an RBI double from Miller.  The Bobcats kept their defensive momentum going, as Theobald allowed no hits in the next two innings for the Pioneers, as FSU came out on top 3-0 in game one.

Sophomore Laura Gilford opened up a game two with a solo shot over the left field fence, for a quick 1-0 Frostburg lead.  Roberts got the start on the mound in game two, keeping Glenville hitless until the fourth inning.  Frostburg struggled on offense as well, stranding four runners on four hits over the next four innings.  The Pioneers were finally able to put something together when they needed it most, tacking on two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 2-1 lead.  After leaving two stranded once more on two hits in the bottom of the sixth, Sanderson hit a two out triple in the bottom of the seventh, and would steal home on a wild pitch, tying the game at two apiece and sending the game to extra innings.

With both teams battling back and forth, Glenville was hitless in the eighth inning as FSU came close to scoring, leaving one left on base. It would take until the tenth inning, where each team began the inning with a runner on second base, in hopes to find a winner.  The Pioneers used this to their advantage to open up the tenth, as they would take a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom half of the inning.  Sanderson started on second in the tenth for the Bobcats, as senior Brianna Powell opened the inning being hit by pitch, allowing FSU to have two runners aboard.  With Roberts up to bat with two on and zero outs, she would find her pitch sending a three-run bomb over the fence, allowing the Bobcats to walk-off with a 5-3 victory in fashion, and the series sweep.

Roberts, along with the walk-off homerun, led the way on offense for Frostburg finishing 5-for-8 on the day with two runs and three RBI.  Buckheit tallied four hits, with Miller and junior Katie Ernst adding three, as three other Bobcats recorded a pair of hits as well.  Theobald earned the win in game one, throwing a complete game and giving up only three hits, while sophomore Alyssa Albright earned the win in game two, coming into pitch the last two innings, giving up two hits and one run.

With the sweep, Frostburg improves to 25-16 on the season, while Glenville drops to 19-19. The Bobcats are set to host Concord on Monday, April 17 for a doubleheader, with times to be announced.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
