CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Frostburg State Softball team swept their Sunday doubleheader by defeating West Virginia Tech 6-0 and Bluefield State 9-1. Â
In game one, both teams were slow to start on offense as neither could put anything together to put numbers on the board. Senior Brianna Powell earned the first hit of the day for either team with a single to center field. Sophomore Jamie Roberts started in the circle for Frostburg, going through the first three batters with ease. West Virginia Tech would get their first hit of the game in the second inning, as junior Ryann Darling responded with a single off her own. Both teams traded hits back and forth until the fifth inning.   Â
FSU's bats woke up in the fifth inning with a homerun to left field by freshman Olivia Stetler that would give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. Freshman Gracie Nelson followed, reaching first on single up the middle. Sophomore Laura Gilford reached base on an error, advancing Nelson to second, as junior Sierra Sanderson laid down the sacrifice bunt, advancing both runners into scoring position. Powell would come up big with a pounding a triple to left field, allowing both runs to cross the plate, giving Frostburg a 3-0 lead.
The Golden Bears had no response in the fifth as both teams were then held hitless in the sixth. Sanderson would get the energy back for the Bobcats opening the seventh inning with a triple to left field. In the next at-bat, Powell reached on a fielder's choice and would go on to steal second. Roberts, up next, grabbed an RBI with a sacrifice fly to left field that would score Sanderson and give the Bobcats a 4-0 lead. Freshman Ashlynn Routzahn would get in on the action reaching first base on a defensive error, allowing Powell to cross the plate. Stetler helped FSU build their lead by hitting an RBI single to left field that would bring Frostburg's lead to six. Roberts would take care of business in the bottom of the seventh, allowing her team to take the 6-0 victory. Â
Sophomore Allyssa Albright got the start as pitcher in the second game, striking out three Bluefield State batters in the first. The Bobcats started to get things going offensively in the bottom of the second, as Roberts and Junior Katie Ernst hit back-to-back singles. Sophomore Samara Funk hit the third single of the inning, allowing the first run of the game to cross the plate. After smart base running and being able to put the ball in play, freshman Gracie Nelson scored on a sacrifice fly to center, allowing FSU to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Â
Sanderson and Gilford both laid down beautiful bunts back-to-back to start the bottom of the third inning, allowing them both to reach base. Sophomore Mackenzie Baker hit a deep sacrifice fly to drive in Gilford. Ernst would keep things going hitting an RBI single to center to score Sanderson. Freshman Ally Myers added to the offensive action grabbing herself a single to center, driving in two more runs to give the Bobcats a 6-0 lead heading into the fourth inning.
Bluefield State was able to get one run back in the fourth, after Albright started the inning with two strikeouts. Frostburg kept their momentum in their next at-bats as Sanderson hit a two-out double to center and would score on an RBI single from Baker. Baker advanced to second on the throw home that would try to catch Sanderson, but being in scoring position, she was able to score on an RBI single from Roberts.Â
Albright would take care of the Golden Bears in the top of the fifth, only facing four batters. In the bottom of the fifth, Meyers hit a leadoff single to right field, followed by a single from junior Ellie Buckheit. Miller would then advance to third as sophomore Desiree Scott put the ball in play and reached on a fielder's choice. Sophomore Adriana Wimmer reached out a fielder's choice as well, allowing Miller to score from third. With the run, FSU was able to finish the game in five innings and get the 9-1 victory.   Â
Roberts and Albright were both credited with wins as both pitched a complete game. Roberts gave up seven hits, no runs, and struck out seven, while Albright gave up two hits, one run, and struck out eight. Sanderson finished the day with four hits and two runs. Four Bobcats were credited with two RBIs each.Â
