Softball Splits Saturday Trip

GLENVILLE, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Softball team split their Saturday doubleheader falling to Ohio Dominican with a final score of 10-2 and going on to defeat Mercyhurst with a final score of 5-4.

Frostburg started out slow in the first game against Ohio Dominican, finding themselves down 5-0 after three innings.  The Bobcats were able to put something together in the top of the fourth, as senior Brianna Powell drew a walk and scored on an RBI double from sophomore Jamie Roberts.  Junior Katie Ernst kept things going for FSU in the fourth inning, hitting an RBI single to center field that would score junior Ellie Buckheit and allow Frostburg to cut their deficit to three.

The Panthers got one back in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 6-2.  The top of the order for FSU couldn't get anything going in the top of the fifth, as ODU would end the game in five innings adding four more runs to their lead for a final score of 10-2.

In the second game, both Frostburg and Mercyhurst started out slow before freshman Olivia Stetler doubled to left field in the bottom of the second, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on an RBI single from sophomore Mackenzie Baker.  The Bobcats kept that offensive momentum going in the bottom of the third as sophomore Laura Gilford hit a leadoff single, advanced to second on a groundout, stole third, and scored on an RBI double by Powell.  Roberts then singled in the next at-bat, allowing Powell to score for a 3-0 Bobcat lead.

Roberts pitched a strong four innings, only giving up four hits and keeping the Lakers scoreless until the fifth.  Mercyhurst got on the board in the top of the fifth to make the score 3-1.  FSU got that run back in their next at-bats as Gilford hit another leadoff single, stole second, advanced again on a groundout, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Powell.  The Lakers responded right away again, getting a run in the top of the sixth making the score 4-2.

The score stayed 4-2 after the sixth inning before Mercyhurst fought back in their last at-bats, tying the game at four in the top of the seventh.  With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, junior Sierra Sanderson singled to center field in hopes of starting a two-out rally for the Bobcats.  In the next at-bat, Powell knew what she had to do in order to put the game away, as she doubled to left field allowing Sanderson to score for the 5-4 victory.

With the walk-off, Powell finished with two hits, two runs, and three RBI on the day.  Roberts went a total 4-for-5 with two RBI.  Roberts was also credited with the win, pitching a complete game with two strikeouts.

After the split, Frostburg is now 10-3 on the season.  The Bobcats will stay on the road to face Shippensburg on Wednesday, March 15 for a doubleheader with the first game set for 2 PM.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
