SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team dropped a close game to the Shippensburg Raiders with a final score of 9-8.
Â
The game started off with strong defense played by both teams. The score remained 0-0 until Hannah Seifried subbed in for the Raiders in the sixth minute and put one in the back of the net to break the ice 1-0. The Frostburg defense and key saves from sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Gray led to a goal by freshman Dahlia Trippel to even the game 1-1. Two minutes later, junior Camden DeMaio added to the score, putting FSU up 2-1. The ball saw both sides of the field in the last few minutes of the quarter with no goals and the Bobcats ending the first quarter on top 2-1.Â
Bringing the momentum from the first quarter into the second quarter, senior Lilly Stephens scored in the first minute, increasing FSU's lead 3-1. Just two minutes later, sophomore Kerri Hayes added another goal to the Bobcats lead. Ali Pioli won the draw for the Raiders and brought it down to Frostburg's defensive half and was able to score Shippensburg's second goal of the day to bring the score to 4-2. Just 25 seconds later, Pioli tallied another goal to cut Frostburg's lead to one. Both teams were scoreless over the next eight minutes, filling the stat sheet with turnovers, fouls, ground balls, shots, and saves. At the very end of the quarter, Sara Vosburg scored on a free position for the Raiders, tying the game 4-4 going into halftime.Â
Trippel scored the first goal of the second half to regain the lead for Frostburg at 5-4, before competitive defense for both teams caused a seven-minute scoring drought. Stephens got some movement for the Bobcats, picking up a ground ball, passing it to freshman Neila Haney, who fed sophomore Julia Badolato for a goal and 6-4 lead. Vosburg brought back the energy for the Raiders, putting two goals in the back of the net in two minutes, tying the score 6-6.Â
Frostburg was first to score in the fourth as DeMaio put the Bobcats up 7-6 in the first 37 seconds of the final quarter. Shippensburg quickly responded with a goal of their own from Abby Seasock, tying the game once again. After a successful clear attempt, DeMaio fed freshman Emily Lamoreaux for a goal making the score 8-7 in favor of FSU. Frostburg played tough defense and created opportunities to score, but failed to find the back of the net to increase their lead as Shippensburg rallied for two more goals, leaving the Bobcats with a heartbreaking 9-8 loss.Â
Despite the loss, DeMaio and Gray had phenomenal days as DeMaio scored three goals for the Bobcats and Gray made 22 saves in goal. Â
Frostburg and Shippensburg both move to 1-1 on the season. The Bobcats will return to the field Thursday, March 9Â for a road game against East Stroudsburg at 5 PM. Information and updates will be posted at frostburgsports.com.
