Women's Lacrosse Ends Florida Trip with Loss to #19 Saint Leo

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team couldn't keep up with No. 19 Saint Leo, falling by a score of 18-10 on the road Thursday afternoon.

The Lions came out striking first, slicing three goals into the back of the net in just over the first six minutes of the game for an early 3-0 lead. FSU responded with their first goal of the game at the 4:57 mark, as freshman Neila Haney found the back of the net to bring the score to 3-1. SLU tacked on two more goals to their lead to finish out the first, making the game 5-1 heading into the second.

Saint Leo kept their momentum going, scoring another opening goal, this time within the first 55 seconds of the quarter. FSU responded once again, as junior Anna Kearney scored off a draw control from the Bobcats. The Lions would then go on another scoring run, scoring four straight goals, jumping out to a 10-2 lead. Frostburg then found themselves going on a run themselves, scoring the next three goals. Senior Jordan Kenney scored her first goal at the 2:52 mark, as Haney would get her second of the day just over a minute later off another draw control before freshman Dahlia Trippel got in on the scoring action, sneaking one into the back of the net on a free position shot with just 31 seconds left in the half. The Lions added one more goal to their lead with just six seconds to go, bringing the score to 11-5 at the break.

Both teams stayed scoreless for the first five minutes of the third quarter, exchanging multiple turnovers. Saint Leo scored their first goal of the second half at the 9:45 mark, as they would tally two more goals in the next two minutes. Freshman Emily Lamoreaux scored her first goal of the game off a successful clear attempt for the Bobcats at the 4:29 mark. Senior Lilly Stephens got in on the scoring action for FSU, scoring to bring the game to14-7 heading into the fourth and final quarter.

Frostburg kept their momentum going in the fourth, opening up the quarter with another goal, as Haney would earn herself a hat trick on the day, scoring on a man-up situation. The Lions responded right away, not letting FSU get any closer, as they added another goal to their lead just two minutes later to bring the score to 15-8. Both teams would trade their next goals, with Saint Leo striking at the 8:40 mark, and Stephens scoring her second of the day on a free position shot shortly after. Saint Leo found the back of the net twice more, as freshman Kristina Fardales tallied on one more goal for the Bobcats to bring the final score to 18-10.

Haney led the way for FSU tallying three goals on the day, along with five draw controls. Stephens was credited with two goals, as five other Bobcats each scored one. Sophomores Nicole Gray and Grace Dickey split time in goal, combining for 14 saves on the day.

With the loss, Frostburg drops to 1-6 while Saint Leo improves to 8-2 on the year. The Bobcats will stay on the road as they start MEC play on Wednesday, March 29 where they will face West Virginia Wesleyan for a game time of 3 PM.
