WHEELING, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team saw their season come to an end with a 103-66 loss against top seed Glenville State on Thursday evening.
Â
GSU began the game with a pair of makes from behind the arc, with junior MacKenzie Freeze scoring all of FSU's points as the teams found themselves tied 6-6 a little over two minutes in. The Pioneers went on a quick 12-3 run to go up 18-9, but Frostburg responded with an and-one from freshman Emilee Weakley and a pair of free throws by senior Ciara Thomas to get within six. Glenville took full command of the game at the 3:15 mark in the quarter, holding the Bobcats scoreless the rest of the period, while scoring the final eight points to go into the second ahead 28-14.
Â
FSU didn't get on the board until three and a half minutes into the second frame, when junior Rhiana Hall broke the scoring drought, which by that time had given GSU a 21-point lead. Thomas got into the paint for a lay-in and Weakley followed with a three to put the score at 40-21, but the Pioneers quickly hit back with five unanswered. Graduate Shelby Funchess and senior Arianna Briggs-Hall got on the board late in the half, but with Glenville shooting above 50% from three and 12 Frostburg turnovers, the regular season champions took a 53-29 lead into the locker room.
Â
Funchess and Weakley scored the Bobcats' first six points of the second half, but the defense couldn't contain GSU's hot shooting, with back-to-back treys and a pair of free throws putting them up 72-35. FSU scored the next nine points on baskets from senior Maggie Sharp, Funchess, and Weakley converting an old-fashioned three-point play. Once more, Glenville took the momentum at the end of the period with the final seven points, taking the game into the fourth at 79-44.
Â
Sharp got a layup and a triple to go either side of a lay-in by Weakley inside the first minute and a half of the final frame, then Funchess added a bucket of her own. The Pioneers responded with eight of the next 10 points, leading 91-55 with just under seven left in the contest. Each of Frostburg's final eight points were scored at the charity stripe, with Weakley and Briggs-Hall combining to go 8-of-8 in the final six minutes. GSU put themselves over the century mark with four minutes remaining, going on to win 103-66.
Â
The Bobcats were led by Weakley's 27 points, which was the most of any scorer and also set a new Mountain East record for points in a single season, as her mark of 766 surpassed West Liberty's Marissa Brown and her 2018-19 total of 755. She added 15 rebounds for her 19
th double-double of the season and was joined in double figure scoring by Sharp and Funchess both having 10 apiece.
Â
With the loss, Frostburg's season comes to a close at 9-21, the most wins for the program since 2018-19, while Glenville moves onto the semifinal round at 27-2.
