FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Basketball team dropped their Saturday afternoon game 88-70 on the road against the Fairmont State Falcons, bringing their season to a close.
After going up and down the court a few times with neither team scoring, Frostburg was the first on the board, as juniors Sean Brown, Jr and Jason Murphy put the Bobcats up 4-0. The Falcons were quick to respond with four points of their own to tie the game. Points and misses were traded back and forth for the next few minutes, with Fairmont holding a narrow 8-7 lead. Fairmont made line-up changes which brought in some energy for the Falcons, leading to a 10-point run and a scoreless Bobcat offense for an 18-7 lead in the eighth minute of the game.Â
Murphy cut the dry spell and slammed the ball into the basket before senior Agyei Edwards, junior Jaylin Albury, and graduate Bo Schene combined for the next six points while Fairmont only scored three to bring Frostburg within seven, but Fairmont shot 41 percent from behind the arc throughout the half, which helped them win the first 20 minutes 46-29.
The Bobcats ended the first half outrebounding the Falcons 20-16, scoring more off the bench points 38-26, earning a better free throw percentage 75-60 and scoring more second chance points, but couldn't overcome Fairmont's hot three-point shooting.
Out of half, the Bobcats were first to put the ball in the basket, as graduate Vincent Smalls made a driving lay-up making the score 46-31. Fairmont answered back and went on a seven-point run to go ahead 53-31. Again, Smalls stepped up and broke the Falcons run, but could not get within 20. Murphy, Edwards, and Smalls helped closed the gap each scoring a few buckets of their own, but couldn't get enough defensive stops down the stretch, resulting in the final 88-70 Fairmont win.Â
Three Bobcats ended the game scoring in double digits, with Smalls' 24, Edwards' 13, and Murphy's 10, while Schene led the team in rebounds with eight.
Having needed to win to have a chance at the MEC Tournament, Frostburg ends their season at 8-20, while Fairmont moves to 22-6 and earned the second seed in the tournament.
