FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg Women's Basketball hosted the Davis & Elkins Senators for their final home game of the 2022-2023 season at Bobcat Arena. The Bobcats celebrated Senior Day where they honored senior Arianna Briggs-Hall and Shelby Funchess. The Bobcats fell to the Senators in a hard-fought effort by a score of 71-65.
The seniors got the scoring going for the Bobcats with Briggs-Hall knocking down an easy jumper in the paint. Funchess would be fouled and convert both free throws to go up 4-3. Senior Maggie Sharp got her name on the board, knocking down her first three of the night. Funchess got out in front of the Senator defense for a fast break lay-up and would get fouled. Funchess would capitalize on the three-point play, giving the Bobcats a 10-2 lead midway through the first. Senior Ciara Thomas found her way to the basket for her first basket of the game. Freshman Emilee Weakley rounded out the first quarter with a short-range jump shot. The first quarter ended in a score of 19-18 Frostburg.
Funchess got the second quarter going, finding her way past the Senator defense for the easy lay-in. D&E would go on a run and take the lead at 24-21. Briggs-Hall would make a floater for her sixth point of the game and a 24-23 Senator lead. After a made hook shot from Funchess the Senators would hold the lead midway through the second at 30-25. Later Sharp would make her second three of the game giving FSU a 31-30 lead. Thomas followed with a fast break lay-up of her own to stretch the lead to 33-30. The Bobcats entered halftime with a three-point lead over the Senators and a score of 35-32.
Weakley opened scoring for the Bobcats in the second half, knocking down a routine jump shot, followed by two free throws making the score 41-39 D&E. Thomas and Briggs-Hall had back-to-back layups for the Bobcats getting the Senator lead to 45-43.. The third quarter concluded with a spree of scoring from both teams with the Bobcats down 50-51 to Davis & Elkins.
Junior Rhiana Hall showed her range, knocking down her first three of the evening to tie the game at 53-53. The Bobcats would struggle to find their way to the basket in the fourth quarter. Junior Mackenzie Freeze got her first points of the night in the fourth quarter, knocking down a mid-range jump shot at the three-minute mark. Weakley rounded out the game for the Bobcats, driving through the Senator defense for a lay-up with 24 seconds left in the game. The Bobcat effort would fall short against the Senators with a final score of 71-65.
Both Weakley and Briggs-Hall earned double-doubles in the game, Weakley scoring 17 points and grabbing 13 rebounds and Briggs-Hall scoring 13 points and collecting 16 rebounds.
With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 8-19 on the season, while the Senators improve to 6-19 overall. Make sure to catch the Bobcats back in action on Saturday, February 25
