FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Frostburg Women's Basketball traveled to Fairmont State on Saturday in their final game of the 2022-2023 regular season, falling 75-92.
The Bobcats got on the board first with a quick jump shot from freshman Emilee Weakley, then senior Maggie Sharp added on four points knocking down a routine jump shot and a pair of two free throws the next possession. The score would sit at 8-13 Fairmont midway through the first, with Weakley pushing the Frostburg offense, going for two fast break lay-ups, along with a smooth jump shot. The Bobcats would close out the quarter with a jump shot from junior Rhiana Hall and found themselves down 16-25 to the Falcons at the end of the first quarter.
Frostburg opened the second quarter with a Weakley fast-break lay-up before senior Arianna Briggs-Hall and junior MacKenzie Freeze both added on two points of their own. Fairmont found an offensive surge midway through the period, taking a 43-24 lead with three minutes left in the half. Some late Bobcat offense was able to make the score 45-28 to the Falcons as the sides headed to the locker room.
Freeze came out of halftime firing, knocking down her first three of the afternoon, with Weakley and Briggs-Hall both gettting up the floor for the Bobcats, scoring on fast break opportunities. With under two minutes in the quarter, Briggs-Hall got ahead of the Falcon defense for two more baskets, then went 4-of-4 on free throws in the final minute of the quarter. Frostburg couldn't find the necessary answers on defense, with Fairmont taking a 70-49 lead into the fourth.
Sharp would look to cut into the Falcon lead early in the final period, showing her ability to knock down the three. Weakley would draw the foul and go on to make both her free throws to cut the Fairmont lead to 18 points. Graduate Shelby Funchess worked her way to the basket, knocking down a routine lay-up, then Weakley added to her performance and hit three more jump shots down the stretch. Despite outscoring the Falcons 26-22 in the quarter, the Bobcats would ultimately fall 92-75.
The Bobcats were led by Weakley, who put up 29 points on the afternoon and collected eight rebounds, while Briggs-Hall earned herself a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 12 boards.
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 8-20 to end the regular season, while the Falcons conclude their season at 22-8.
