Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Wheeling Uses Strong Fourth Quarter to Down Women's Basketball

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team traveled to Wheeling and saw their three-game winning streak snapped in a 72-63 loss.

The Bobcats opened the game with a three-point shot from junior MacKenzie Freeze, as neither side grasped much momentum in the early minutes of the game, trading baskets. Freshman Emilee Weakley powered her way to the basket for back-to-back layups for FSU to keep the score tied at seven, but the Cardinals scored nine of the next eleven points to go up 16-9. Senior Arianna Briggs-Hall got a lay-in to fall in the final seconds of the period, taking the game into the second at 16-11.

Graduate Shelby Funchess and senior Maggie Sharp got their first points of the day with a mid-range jumper and a triple, respectively, then Briggs-Hall brought Frostburg within one inside the first two minutes. Wheeling got their lead back to six, but Weakley added two more baskets for the Bobcats to once again tie the score at 26-26 just over midway through the quarter. With under two minutes remaining in the second quarter, Freeze gave the Bobcats back-to-back jump shots, followed by Weakley adding a three-point shot to give Frostburg an eight-point lead, with WU scoring a layup at the buzzer to go into haltime 38-32.

Wheeling's defense shored up in the first three minutes of the third, getting the deficit to within one before junior Rhiana Hall knocked down two quick jump shots in the paint. The Cardinals scored six in a row as the game turned into a back-and-forth battle, with Weakley providing another pair of Bobcat buckets 30 seconds apart. A free throw from each team in the final minute brought the game to a narrow 48-47 Frostburg advantage headed to the final frame.

Sharp dialed up from behind the arc, hitting two in a row to keep the Bobcats in the lead in the first two and a half minutes. Once again, Wheeling was able to cut the FSU lead and tie the score up at 56-56 with just over six minutes remaining. WU locked down defensively and was able to effectively secure the game by holding the Bobcats to just one made field goal in the last six minutes, while shooting 70% from the field themselves in the quarter to end up 72-63 winners.

Weakley led the Bobcats in scoring with 21 points, followed by Sharp's 13 and Briggs-Hall's 10, with the latter earning herself a double-double on the afternoon by grabbing 11 rebounds. Hall led the defensive charge with seven boards and a pair of blocks.

With the loss, Frostburg falls to 8-18 on the season, while the Cardinals move to 13-13 overall. Make sure to catch the Bobcats back in action on Wednesday, February 22 as they return home to Bobcat Arena for senior night and a 5:30PM tip-off with the Davis & Elkins Senators.
