Men's Basketball Drops Road Contest to Mountain Lions

ATHENS, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Basketball team fell on the road to Concord by a final score of 86-65 on Wednesday night.

Freshman Zane McCarty and junior JayShaun Freeman got the Bobcats out to a quick start with back-to-back threes a minute and a half into the game, followed up by another jumper by the former and a triple from the latter for an 11-4 lead. The Mountain Lions swiftly hit back, knocking down a pair from downtown of their own, then putting in a pair of free throws for their first lead at 12-11. Freeman continued his streak from range, to put FSU ahead two, but CU scored seven unanswered, forcing a Frostburg timeout.

Redshirt sophomore Justin Roseme put a lay-in to go, but Concord held FSU scoreless for the next five minutes, building up a 31-16 lead before McCarty finally got a shot to fall. Another three minutes went by before another McCarty make, then senior Jaylon Johnson took over the offense, scoring on a feed from freshman Logan Lewis, then taking a steal coast-to-coast to make it a 37-24 game at the final media timeout of the half.

After freshman Vilius Slanina pulled in an offensive board, Johnson again hit a shot in the lane, then two straight buckets from junior Koby Baptiste got the Bobcats within a single-digit deficit at 39-30 with just over a minute to go. Concord made a string of free throws late on, but a last-second shot by freshman Malcolm Day put the halftime score at 43-33 Mountain Lions.

Lewis opened the second half with Frostburg's first four points, then fed Freeman for a score that put the deficit at eight in the first four minutes. Once more, Frostburg's offense stalled for three minutes, as CU stretched their lead out to 57-39, with Day flushing a dunk to end the run. The Takoma Academy product would slam home again 30 seconds later, but it would be another six minutes before any Bobcat scored, with the Mountain Lions taking a commanding 74-43 lead.

Junior Robby Williams and Johnson each hit a triple, with senior Sean Brown Jr. and Slanina getting put-backs to go as part of a 10-1 Bobcat run. Williams went on to make another shots from distance, with baskets from Lewis and Brown Jr. making the final score 86-65 in favor of Concord.

Freeman and Williams both reached double figures at 11 points apiece, with the latter also swiping a game-high three steals. Brown Jr. grabbed a team-high seven boards to go with a pair of blocks and a steal.

With the loss, Frostburg falls to 1-9, while CU improves to 7-1. The Bobcats are back home on Saturday, December 9 to face Glenville State for a 4 p.m. tip-off. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
