INSTITUTE, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Basketball team fell on the road against West Virginia State on Saturday by a final score of 85-56.
Â
Junior Sebastian Gahse scored the first point of the game after getting fouled on his shot attempt and going one-of-two at the line. WVSU responded with a six-point run, to which freshman Zane McCarty and junior JayShaun Freeman responded with back-to-back buckets, the latter making a three for a 6-6 score after the first five minutes.
Â
A quick 8-2 Yellow Jacket run put the hosts up by six, but freshman Logan Lewis scored twice in the lane and McCarty nailed a trey to keep the deficit at 14-13. FSU held WVSU scoreless for nearly four minutes, but couldn't break through on offense until redshirt sophomore Justin Roseme and junior Koby Baptiste combined for six points for a 19-19 tie with just over six minutes to go in the half.
Â
The Yellow Jacket defense clamped down, holding the Bobcats without a field goal for three and a half minutes, in the meantime scoring eight unanswered for a 27-19 lead at the four-minute mark. Junior Robby Williams scored his first points on a make from deep, but WVSU scored the final five points to take a 32-22 halftime lead.
Â
An offensive flurry sparked the start of the second half, with the Yellow Jackets hitting a couple triples to go up 14, before Gahse scored a pair from the charity stripe followed by a dunk, then McCarty and Baptiste make two straight layups for a frantic 40-30 score. Frostburg didn't score for the next four and a half minutes, as WVSU began to find their rhythm, going on a 13-point run that blew the game open 53-32.
Â
Baptiste ended the drought with a bucket in the paint off a Williams assist, then Lewis scored a couple tough baskets in the lane, the latter being an and-one, but FSU couldn't come up with stops defensively, trailing 60-37 with 12 minutes remaining. The Yellow Jackets never let their lead slip lower than 19 points the rest of the way, with sophomore Dylan Long providing the last bits of Bobcat offense on a mid-range jumper and a deep three, as the final score ended 85-56 for the hosts.
Â
McCarty was the lone FSU player to reach double figures at 11 points, while Baptiste stuffed the stat sheet with a team-high nine rebounds, three steals, and a pair of blocks.
Â
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 1-8, while WVSU improves to 4-3. The Bobcats stay on the road to face Concord Wednesday, December 6 at 7:30 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
