LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Frostburg Women's Basketball Team fell to Lock Haven on the road on Wednesday evening by a score of 68-57.
Frostburg won the jump ball and got off to a quick 2-0 start as freshman Alanna Tate layed in the first bucket. Lock Haven on the counter, came down the court, hit a three-pointer, followed by a jump shot to lead 5-2. Freshman Jenna Muha then put up two to cut LHU's lead to one. Tate and Muha combined for the next seven points while LHU kept up and the score became tied 11-11 headed into the second quarter.
Lock Haven got off to a quick start, creating two back-to-back layups to lead 15-11. Muha stopped LHU's scoring run with another layup at 15-13 but the Eagles' Carly Fitzmorris reciprocated with one of her own to go back up by four. Some scoreless moments passed by until FSU fouled LHU and sent them to the line, as they went one for two. Two minutes later, junior Jasmine Johnson created a three-point play for the Bobcats, getting within 18-16. In the following three minutes, Lock Haven created eight points to lead 26-16. Driving to the basket, Tate earned a shooting foul, knocking down both, but the Eagles earned the last four points of the half, going into the locker room up 30-18.
Coming out of the locker room FSU was ready to take the second half, starting with Muha, on a pass from Tate, put another one to the glass and through the net at 30-20. Seeing their first points of the day, graduate Maggie Sharp hit a three and junior Mackenzie Freeze had a driving layup to pull within 32-25. LHU's Jenadia Jordan countered with a three of her own to go back up by 10, as scores went back and forth until Lock Haven got their greatest lead in the third minute at 41-29. Senior Ciara Thomas got her first two points, cutting the lead down to eight, battling the whole quarter and going into the fourth 48-40, outscoring LHU 22-18 in the frame.
Sharp, racking up her points, scored six right off the bat and allowed the Bobcats to cut the lead to three at 50-47. Thomas got the score within one after knocking down two free throws, but Jordan had another two for LHU to lead 52-49. Freshman Mandy Roman scored two, cutting it to one again 52-51, but Frostburg's offense stalled, with Lock Haven starting to pull away, making the scoring gap 10 under the three-minute mark at 62-52. FSU was able to score five more points in the fourth while LHU scored six, winning 68-57.
Tate finished with 14 points, five rebounds, five assists and a steal, while Sharp joined her in double-digit scoring with 14 points and a team-high four steals. Muha finished with nine points, eight rebounds, and a block on her night.
With the loss, Frostburg fall to an overall record of 1-2 while Lock Haven moves to 2-1. FSU is back in action on Saturday, November 18 at 2pm in Elkins, WV versus Davis & Elkins. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
