Women's Basketball Fends Off Late Senator Rally to Win MEC Opener

ELKINS, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team picked up their first MEC win of the season, defeating Davis & Elkins on the road with a final score of 74-71 on Saturday afternoon.

The Senators scored the first basket of the game on a layup before Frostburg had a try at offense. FSU struggled to put the ball in the basket at first, missing their first five shots of the game, before freshman Alanna Tate would convert a layup in the paint for an 8-2 game. Tate kept her momentum going, knocking down another layup for the Bobcats, then sophomore Emilee Weakley connected on a bucket to bring the score to 11-6 with just four minutes left in the first quarter. Weakley and freshman Jenna Muha both made a pair of free throws to end the quarter with D&E leading 15-10.

Muha connected on a jumper to kick things off in the second, followed by Weakley firing from behind the arc to bring Frostburg within two. Senior MacKenize Freeze found graduate Maggie Sharp for a three that gave the Bobcats their first lead of the game, but the Senators knocked down a jumper on the next possession to jump back in front 19-18. Both teams remained scoreless over the next three minutes, trading missed shots back and forth. It wasn't until junior Jasmine Johnson grabbed an offensive rebound and went back up with it to bring the game to 22-20 in favor of D&E. Both teams then proceeded to trade baskets, before FSU went on a 10-1 run, with freshmen Grace Middleton and Jenna Liska scoring their first points of the game, giving Frostburg a 30-28 advantage at the half.

FSU once again scored the opening points of the third quarter, with Muha converting two free throws. A jumper from Tate and a three-pointer from Weakley put the Bobcats ahead by five, before a trey by Freeze pushed Frostburg ahead 42-34 with 6:22 left in the third. The Senators traded baskets with FSU, getting them within seven, before a deep three from Weakley pushed the Bobcat lead to double digits at 51-41. D&E ended the quarter on a 7-2 run, bringing the score to 55-50 heading into the fourth and final quarter.

Weakley opened the frame with a quick floater in the paint, then layups from Muha and Johnson increased the Bobcat lead to eight. Frostburg kept their offensive momentum going, continuing to find ways to put the ball in the basket and keep the lead. Layups from Weakley, junior Harley Herndon, and Tate kept FSU in front, before the Senators scored seven straight points to tie the game at 71 apiece with under a minute left in regulation. Two clutch free throws from Weakley gave the Bobcats the lead with 55 seconds left, as another free throw from Freeze, a steal from Sharp, and two missed free throws from D&E allowed Frostburg to hang on for the 74-71 victory.

Weakley led all scorers with 27, going 3-for-5 from deep, and 6-for-7 from the charity stripe. Tate added 12, while Sharp and Muha each had nine, as Muha and Johnson grabbed eight rebounds each.

With the win, FSU moves to 2-2 on the season, while D&E drops to 0-3. The Bobcats are back in action on Tuesday, November 21 at 5:30 PM remaining on the road for another MEC matchup against West Virginia Wesleyan. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
