FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team earned a hard-fought, 2-1 comeback victory over Concord on Saturday night in front of their Homecoming crowd.
Â
In a battle of two of the top sides in the MEC, FSU started out the quicker team, as sophomore Carly Gillette saw an effort go just wide of goal and junior Madi Allen had a pair of shots saved by keeper Sarah Pattillo in the first seven minutes.
Â
CU would immediately hit back, scoring on their first real attack of the contest, as a cross came in from the right wing to the center of the box, where Olivia Bekeleski was afforded enough space to fire home eight and a half minutes in. Gillette shot wide again in an attempt to quickly equalize, but the visitors controlled much of the attacking play over the next five minutes. The Mountain Lions fired off three shots in quick succession, though none found their mark as they saw the majority of possession.
Â
Senior Toni Fiocco-Mizer had a chance on a breakaway that was saved by Pattillo, then Homman fired a free kick from distance into the netminder's waiting arms. Concord thought they had their second goal after a corner was headed towards net, but senior Ashley Bilger came up with the stop to keep FSU in the game.
Â
Frostburg slowly started to generate some attacks, as junior Carolyn DeSena was denied from a tight angle, followed by Gillette shooting from distance but not quite able to trouble Pattillo enough. In the final 15 minutes of the half, freshman Madison Hinton fired wide, followed by Bilger needing to make another save, then Hinton's shot from deep was straight at Pattillo, taking the game into the half with a 1-0 Concord advantage.
Â
In keeping with large parts of the first half, CU opened the second by forcing Bilger into another pair of saves, keeping their foot on the gas in searching for a second goal. As Frostburg got up the field, they were able to win a few free kicks, with one of them being given just outside the 18. Senior Hannah Thompson stepped up and hit the ball right into the path of Allen, whose touch beat Pattillo into the far post to suddenly even the match up 1-1.
Â
The Bobcats became a team transformed from the equalizer, flying forward in attack and looking to steal the lead. Junior Keely Knotts provided the magical moment, blasting a shot from far outside the box and seeing Pattillo misjudge the ball as it flew into the back of the net to complete the turnaround 2-1.
Â
Frostburg kept pressing forward, limiting Concord to one deep shot that was straight into the arms of Bilger, while DeSena and Hinton both had shots go just wide of goal. The Mountain Lions threw everything they had at the Bobcat goal, but the defense combined with some wayward finishing meant that Bilger didn't have to make a save in the last 20 minutes. Thompson had a late header saved off a corner by Pattillo, as FSU frantically worked to keep the ball in their offensive third, eventually running down the clock for the 2-1 victory.
Â
Allen's goal put her in the team lead with six on the year, while Knotts' strike was her first of the season, becoming the 13
th Bobcat to find the back of the net this year. Both sides had 17 shots, with FSU holding the 10-6 edge in shots on goal.
Â
Frostburg improves to 10-1 on the year with the win, while Concord falls to 6-3-2. The Bobcats will remain at home to face West Virginia State on Wednesday, October 11 at 7 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
