Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Held to Draw Against 10-Women West Virginia State

FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team was held to a 0-0 draw against West Virginia State on Wednesday evening, with the visitors having to play a majority of the game with 10 players.

FSU had the game's first opportunity as senior Toni Fiocco-Mizer cut inside the box on her right foot but shot too close to Yellow Jacket keeper Laura Galindo. The Bobcats continued to add pressure over the next 10 minutes, with sophomore Carly GIllette firing widem senior Lela Clark seeing a tame shot saved, and junior Mei Homman having a dangerous bouncing free kick tipped over the bar.

WVSU used a breakaway to win a penalty through Esther Dhiramo, who was brought down by senior Ashley Bilger in the box. Bilger made amends, diving to her left to save the PK and keep the game scoreless. Junior Keely Knotts then tried her luck from distance but again was too close to Galindo.

The match changed entirely just over 22 minutes in, as a battle between Dhiramo and sophomore Mary Greco on the sideline resulted in both players going to ground, where Dhiramo kicked out at the Frostburg left back and was shown a straight red card.

The Bobcats dominated possession, but when presented shooting opportunities couldn't find the target, missing the goal entirely on five occasions. Fiocco-Mizer and Greco were the only FSU players to have shots on goal, with both efforts straight at Galindo as the sides went into the half scoreless.

Fiocco-Mizer opened the second half with a shot that went wide, as WVSU played defensively from the outset. Greco had an effort straight at Galindo before Homman put one wide a minute later. Much of Frostburg's play resulted in either shots that missed their mark or were right at Galindo, as the clock ticked inside the final 15 minutes.

Junior Carolyn DeSena came closest to breaking the deadlock, as her blast from distance came agonizingly back off the crossbar with Galindo beaten, as the follow-up also went wide. Homman, senior Kayla Robinson, and sophomore Morgan Mrizek all tried to test Galindo, but each effort continued to be too close inside the last 10 minutes. Sophomore Skylar Ehart had the last shot of the game with a minute and a half remaining, but again couldn't put it either side of Galindo, as the clock ran out for the scoreless draw.

With the result, Frostburg stands at 10-1-1 on the year, while West Virginia State is now 6-4-2. FSU returns to action on the road Sunday, October 15 to face West Virginia Wesleyan at 1 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
