Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Smith, Gillette Power Women's Soccer to Road Win Over Senators

ELKINS, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team rebounded from their first loss of the year with a 2-0 road victory over Davis & Elkins on Wednesday afternoon.

Junior Madi Allen had the first chance of the match just over three minutes in, as senior Lela Clark crossed into the box and found Allen's head but couldn't generate enough power to get past the keeper. Four minutes later, the Bobcats did find the opening goal, as senior Toni Fiocco-Mizer received a quick throw-in from sophomore Mary Greco and crossed to junior Cat Smith to put in the top of the net for her second goal of the year and a 1-0 lead.

FSU kept driving forward, as Allen and junior Keely Knotts both saw their efforts go wide before Allen again fired right at Gabriela Acevedo in goal. Frostburg had opportunities but couldn't find their mark, as Allen, sophomore Carly Gillette, and senior Hannah Thompson all shot off target midway through the half.

The Senators got their first shot of the game after a Bobcat turnover in midfield on the 30-minute mark, with senior Ashley Bilger making a smart diving save to thwart Frederique Morin's shot from outside the 18. Smith nearly doubled the advantage three minutes later, powering a header onto the post following a corner with Acevedo beaten. Sophomore Jayme Sooy saw a shot saved by Acevedo, who then did well to tip away a quick free kick from distance off the boot of junior Mei Homman. Freshman Madison Hinton had the last chance to increase the lead before halftime, but her ranged effort was straight at Acevedo.

D&E opened the second half on the front foot, pressing high up the field but unable to create any clear-cut chances. The Bobcats recaptured momentum, as Fiocco-Mizer and Greco both had shots saved by Acevedo. 13 minutes into the half, Homman blasted a shot that just glanced the top of the bar and went over. Thompson then had a header off a corner saved before Frostburg finally found their second goal. Clark sent a great cross into the box from the right wing, where Gillette coolly finished on the volley with her left foot, beating Acevedo for the 2-0 lead.

Inside the final 20 minutes, senior Dez Mortimer flicked a header towards goal, with Fiocco-Mizer smartly heading it on herself but right at Acevedo. Fiocco-Mizer then had a shot deflected just outside the 18 on her left foot that drifted wide of goal, then Gillette also fired wide as traffic was all FSU.

As the clocked ticked down to the final 15 minutes, Fiocco-Mizer went in search of a goal for herself, getting away three shots, but only one of them was on goal and was saved by Acevedo. Bilger was forced into her second save of the match on a Senator counter-attack, then Mortimer had a half-volley go just wide of the goal and sophomore Hannah Clagett had an effort saved with the game becoming stretched.

D&E kept going forward in search of a way back into the contest, but neither of their final two attempts were on target, as the Bobcat defense held firm and kept the clean sheet. FSU had a 26-4 advantage in shots, with twelve on goal to the hosts' two.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 9-1 on the year, while Davis & Elkins falls to 2-6-1. The Bobcats return home on Saturday, October 7 to face Concord for Homecoming Weekend at 5:30 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
