BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – Senior Toni Fiocco-Mizer scored a late goal and the Frostburg State defense came up with another clean sheet in Women's Soccer's 1-0 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.
Â
In a chilly, rainy affair, FSU came out of the gate the better of the two sides, as they controlled possession, which led to sophomore Carly Gillette getting the first shot of the game away inside the first two minutes, though it was right at keeper Alyssa Williams. Just over three minutes later, junior Carolyn DeSena was played through on a breakaway and thought she had given Frostburg the lead with a shot arrowing towards the top corner, but Williams flung a hand to tip the ball over the bar.
Â
Over the next ten minutes, FSU peppered the Wesleyan goal with five shots, but all were either right at Williams or missed their mark. On a pair of counter-attack opportunities, WVWC got away two shots, but neither troubled senior goalkeeper Ashley Bilger too terribly, making an easy catch and seeing the latter go well wide.
Â
Fiocco-Mizer found her shooting boots with a hit from distance that went just wide, followed by sophomore Mary Greco foraying forward and seeing a shot grabbed in the air by Williams, then Fiocco-Mizer blasted another deep shot that went just over the bar. With time winding down in the half, junior Mackenzie Alonso played DeSena into the box, as her attempt to cut the ball back across goal was snagged by Williams, leading to a halftime score of 0-0.
Â
The opening of the second half appeared much like the first in terms of possession, though Frostburg found scoring chances harder to come by. Juniors Madi Allen and Keely Knotts both couldn't keep their shots on target, as each was the only shots inside the first 15 minutes for either side. FSU nearly had the ball in the back of the net on 64 minutes, as Fiocco-Mizer surged into the box and passed the ball across the face of goal, but Wesleyan had enough defenders back to block Gillette's shot on the line.
Â
WVWC bunkered down defensively, limiting Frostburg to just one shot, a wide header from junior Cat Smith, over the next 10 minutes. A rare Wesleyan opportunity forward ultimately came to nothing, as Bilger made an easy save with under 15 to go.
Â
Senior Dez Mortimer snapped a quick-fire shot that just missed hitting the bar inside the last ten minutes as FSU pressed for a winning goal. The moment would come after senior Hannah Thompson won the header in midfield, then the ball pinged between Fiocco-Mizer, Alonso, and Gillette, who found DeSena in a crossing position, putting the ball on a plate for Fiocco-Mizer to tap home for the lead with just under nine minutes remaining.
Â
As Frostburg wound the clock down, they were awarded three straight corners, the last of which Allen rose highest to meet the ball, but was denied by Williams with the last chance of the match.
Â
FSU outshot Wesleyan 20-4, with nine shots on goal to just two for the hosts on the way to the team's second-straight shutout.
Â
With the win, Frostburg improves to 11-1-1 on the year, while WVWC falls to 2-10-1. FSU stays on the road to face Notre Dame (Ohio) on Wednesday, October 18 at 3 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
