SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio - The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team used a fantastic goal from junior Madi Allen and some strong defense to secure a 1-0 road victory against Notre Dame (Ohio).
NDC had the first shot of the game just 30 seconds in, with MEC leading scorer Miriam Szijarto firing wide of goal. FSU earned a corner kick just a minute later, as Allen tried to get away a volley in a crowded box, but coudln't put it on target. Senior Toni Fiocco-Mizer thought she'd given the Bobcats the lead, as a poor clearance gave her a shot just six yards out, but the Falcons had enough bodies back to block the ball from going over the line and keep the game scoreless.
With just over 16 minutes gone, senior Lela Clark also came ever-so-close to finding the net, as she was played in by a brilliant through ball from junior Carolyn DeSena, but saw her effort kicked onto the post by Notre Dame keeper Jordan Pasalaqua. Sophomore Mary Greco fired a shot from distance, but was straight at Pasalaqua with FSU controlling much of the atttacking play.
Their pressure paid off midway through the half, as senior Dez Mortimer received the ball in midfield with plenty of space to run into, where she then played Allen into the box, cutting onto her right foot and curling a gorgeous shot into the top right corner for the 1-0 lead. A minute later, Mortimer attempted to get a quick-fire second goal, but couldn't generate enough power to fully trouble Pasalaqua.
The Falcons had just one shot the rest of the half, while Mortimer, Fiocco-Mizer, and juniors Mackenzie Alonso and Keely Knotts all saw shots go off target. As the half went into the final five minutes, junior Mei Homman fired a free kick just over the bar, while Greco shot from deep again, with Pasalaqua making a jumping catch to take the sides into the half at 1-0.
FSU continued to enjoy possession in the second half, as sophomore Carly Gillette tried her luck from just outside the box, shooting high and wide five minutes in. Allen followed by turning in the box and attempting a shot from just a few yards out, but was blocked away by the Notre Dame defense. Knotts had a pair of efforts that went wide, the latter being off a header trying to find the lower right corner of goal.
At the 20 minute-mark in the half, the Falcons worked their way back into some possession, eventually earning a corner from which Szijarto could only plant her header wide. It would be the best scoring chance NDC got the rest of the contest, as Frostburg's defense remained locked in. With just under 23 minutes remaining Mortimer nearly doubled the lead with a blast from outside the 18 that beat Pasalaqua, but came cannoning back off the bar and out of the danger area.
Fiocco-Mizer and sophomore Jayme Sooy both shot from distance straight at Pasalaqua, but neither could get past the netminder. In the final 10 minutes, the Falcons threw bodies forward in search of an equalizer, but could only manage one shot that was easily blocked, as FSU came away 1-0 winners.
The Bobcats outshot Notre Dame 23-5, not allowing a shot on goal while having nine in return. The victory clinched at least a share of the MEC North Division title for FSU, their fourth straight, having taken a nine-point lead over NDC with three games to play.
With the win, Frostburg improves to 12-1-1, while the Falcons fall to 7-4-3. The Bobcats return to action at home on Saturday, October 21 to face Salem (WV) at 7 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
