FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Volleyball team dropped their home match to West Virginia State Saturday afternoon by a score of 3-0.
An intense first set that had the crowd on the edge of their seats, started with a kill from FSU junior AJ Thompson. Points were traded respectively until WVSU was able to earn a small lead by a score of 14-9. Frostburg trailed most of the set, but by no more than five points. Frostburg was able to attack the ball and get the score within one point 22-21. The Yellow Jackets earned the next two points, jumping ahead 24-21, making it game point. Out of a timeout by FSU, the Bobcats were ready to bring the action. A service ace and kill by Thompson allowed for Frostburg to tie the game 24-24. Thompson, with another ace, gave FSU the lead 25-24. WVSU was able to get out of the jam they were in, taking advantage of the next three plays, earning three points consecutively. This gave the Yellow Jackets the set win 27-25.
WVSU wanted to keep things rolling, putting up a quick 4-0 score to start set two. FSU earned their first point of the set on a Yellow Jacket service error, making the score 4-1. A kill by WVSU and senior Beverly Braun accounted for the next two points, to bring the score to 5-2. The Yellow Jackets went on a small run upping their score 11-3. FSU stopped the run when senior McKaily Thomson-Moran smashed the ball past WVSU's blockers for a 11-4 score. The Bobcats started to trail but never gave up, as Thompson, Braun, and Thomson-Moran recorded more kills on their stat sheet. Frostburg was able to get the score within five points, 22-16. Freshman Maddie Lewis put up another point for Frostburg earning the Bobcats last point of the match. With thirteen kills in the set, it was unfortunately not enough to out score WVSU, as the Yellow Jackets took the second set 25-17.
With the previous set being a nail-biter, this third set saw points being traded back-and-forth majority of the time. Frostburg was quick to start putting points on the board, with back-to-back kills by Braun and Thomson-Moran making the score 2-0. WVSU quickly tied things up at two apiece, with two kills of their own. Point after point, each team traded kills, blocks, and errors. WVSU got their largest lead when the score read 14-10. FSU trailed by no more than four points majority of the set, until WVSU took over and won the third set 25-18, winning the match 3-0.
On offense, Braun led FSU in kills with nine, while redshirt senior Hayley Delor dished out a game-high 26 assists. Junior Fiona Gonzalez Medina racked up 11 digs on defense, with Delor coming in right behind her with nine.
With the conclusion of the game, Frostburg falls to an overall record of 9-12 while West Virginia State moves to an overall record of 16-4. The Bobcats will see the court again on Tuesday, October 17 as they take on Shippensburg at home at 7 PM. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
