BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Basketball team suffered a tough loss at the hands of West Virginia Wesleyan by a final score of 81-71 on the road.
A bright spot on the evening was senior Agyei Edwards scoring the 1,000th point of his FSU career, becoming the 22nd player in school history to reach the mark. He is the first player to reach the milestone since former standout Daniel Alexander got there in 2019, and is also the first player in program history to score all 1,000 of his points at the Division II level.Â
Â
FSU came out ready to play, as junior Jason Murphy scored an early putback to go with a pair of dunks and graduate Juston Bailey hit a layup and a three for an 11-5 lead. Murphy dropped another lay-in to push the lead to eight, but Frostburg went cold after the first media timeout. The team scored just one point over the next three and a half minutes, allowing WVWC to close within 14-10. Murphy and Bailey tried to spark the offense with a pair of buckets, but again FSU couldn't find the basket for over four minutes, bringing Wesleyan within one at 18-17.
Â
Junior Sean Brown, Jr. finally broke the duck with a much-needed three, followed by another Murphy score to go ahead by six. Another three minutes went by before Frostburg got their next score, allowing WVWC to take a five-point lead with 2:33 left in the half. Junior Jaylin Albury hit a layup in the final minute of the half to go into the break with Wesleyan taking a slight 30-28 lead.
Â
Unfortunately for Frostburg, the low-scoring continued into the second half, as Bailey and graduate Vincent Smalls provided the only four points in the opening nine minutes, allowing Wesleyan to take control of the game 48-32. Edwards got into the scoring column with a trey, then Albury, Smalls, and senior Jamil Jones all got shots to fall before Edwards hit another pair from deep, but each time WVWC was able to respond with baskets of their own to maintain a double-digit lead. Bailey and Smalls combined for the next seven FSU points but weren't able to make a significant dent into the deficit.
Â
Edwards and Smalls made things interesting late on, as the former converted an and-one plus a three, while the latter split a pair at the line and added a layup to get within 11. Edwards then scored six straight points on two freebies at the charity stripe and a pair of scores at the bucket to get FSU all the way back within six in the final minute, but the scores were too little, too late for the team in the end, falling 81-71 late on.
Â
Edwards scored all of his team-high 21 points in the second half to reach his milestone, with Murphy adding a 16-11 double-double along with a pair of blocks. Smalls and Bailey both contributed 12 points apiece.
Â
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 5-12, while Wesleyan improves to 2-13. FSU is back on the court Saturday, January 21 to face Fairmont State at 4 p.m. Information and updates will be posted at frostburgsports.com.
